  • Works of National Artists Benedicto “Bencab” Cabrera and Federico Aguilar Alcuaz were recently shown at the Leon Gallery for an exhibit entitled “The Sons Return.” The two artists were both expatriates and the works that were showcased in the said exhibit all reflected and told the story of their trips and travels.

    Aguilar Alcuaz studied art in Madrid – in the same university as one other Filipino ilustrado – and became popular in Spain and France. Some of the awards he won were: first prize at the Premio Moncada in 1957, Prix Francisco Goya, the Diploma of Honor at the International Exhibition of Art Libre in 1961, and the Order of French Genius in 1964.

    BenCab, on the other hand, is a printmaker known for his “Sabel” series in pen, ink, and in mixed media. Some of his works which were shown in the gallery was “A Rare Gentleman, 1900” from his “Larawan” series, nudes, and works from the Japanese period. The artist is currently settling in Baguio.

    Leon Gallery is located in Eurovilla 1, Rufino corner Legazpi Village in Makati City.
