Through the agreement, as cited by Manila Bulletin, PLDT with its wireless unit Smart Communications (Smart) and strategy and technology partner Huawei Technologies Philippines will jointly conduct research and development on 5G (fifth-generation wireless broadband technology).
According to Atty. Ray C. Espinosa, Chief Corporate Services Officer at PLDT and Smart, the collaboration targets to “help boost the country’s development in a world that is rapidly turning digital.”
Last year, Smart and Huawei successfully combined five frequencies through Carrier Aggregation (CA), a capability of LTE-A, to achieve data speeds of 1.4 Gbps (gibabit per second).
In April 2016, Smart used the CA to roll out the country’s first LTE-A service which is initially deployed in Boracay.
Soon, it will be deployed to major urban areas, such as Metro Davao, Metro Cebu, and Metro Manila, to deliver peak speeds of more than 100 Mbps to users with LTE-A capable devices.
