The announcement was made by Lunchbox Theater Productions Chief Executive James Cundall during Wicked’s media call last Friday. According to him, the American production of West Side Story is set  to begin its Manila run on August 10, and The Sound of Music on October 3. Both productions will be performed at The Theatre in Solaire.

West Side Story is a musical inspired by the William Shakespeare classic Romeo and Juliet. It is a romantic tragedy telling the story of the rivalry between two teenage gangs of different ethnic backgrounds: the Jets and the Sharks. Everything becomes more complicated than it already is when the protagonist Tony, from the Jets, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Sharks’ leader.

The musical is known for its songs which include “Maria”, “Something’s Coming”, and “One Hand, One Heart”.

Before Julie Andrews popularized the song “Do-Re-Mi” in the musical film of the same name, The Sound of Music was, first, a Broadway musical based on the book “The Story of the Trapp Family” by Catherine Von Trappe. It tells the story of Maria Rainer who transforms the gloomy home of the Von Trappe family to one that is filled with joy, love, and laughter. The story is set in 1938 Austria, just before the country became a part of Nazi Germany.

This musical film made famous the songs such as “The Sound of Music”, “Do-Re-Mi”, and “My Favorite Things”.
