  • Smart Communications upgrades LRT-1’s cellular network coverage
  • To improve the mobile experience of LRT-1 commuters, mobile company Smart Communications is set to beef up its 26, 3G, and 4G network coverage in the area.

In this initiative, Smart will be deploying state-of-the-art equipment at the stations and platforms, inside the coaches, and along the tracks of LRT-1. Smart is set to install “carrier-grade WiFi in the 20 stations and platforms. According to PLDT and Smart’s chief technology and integration advisor Joachim Horn, “The LRT upgrade is part of Smart’s extensive network modernization program to provide consistent and reliable voice, SMS, and mobile data particularly LTE services to our subscribers.”

In line with this upgrade, Smart has already enhanced coverage in LRT-1 depot in Pasay City wherein LTE speeds have gone up to 25 mbps outside the depot and 12 mbps inside. Similar improvements are also in the works for both LRT2 and MRT3. This is being done to improve the overall quality of Smart’s mobile service for the convenience of its subscribers.

For Metro Manila, Smart is looking to “quadruple its indoor LTE coverage and double its indoor 3G coverage by deploying equipment in about 2,500 cell sites which will cover a larger area and provide better indoor signals.
