CALL FOR ENTRIES: adobo Design Awards Asia begins this February
One of Asia’s most important creative awards, the adobo Design Awards Asia (aDAA), is once again looking for the best of the best when it comes to design.
adobo magazine, in partnership with D&AD, a UK-based educational organization know to stage one of the world’s toughest creative competitions, call on designers from across the region to participate in this year’s adobo Design Awards Asia.

This year’s competition will feature sixteen Professional categories and an Open category to encourage professionals, freelancers, and students to explore the limits of their creativity.
Professional Categories, patterned loosely after D&AD’s own competition, include Press and Poster, Corporate/Brand Identity, Typography, Illustration, Book Design, Magazine and Newspaper Design, Film Advertising, Videos, Short Film, Film/Video Craft, Graphic Design, Packageing Design, Outdoor, Environmental/Spatial Design, Product Design, Wearable Design, Production Design, Photography, Digital/Interactive, and Mobile.
These categories call for works from professional designers regardless of theme or purpose, and must have been published from March 2016 onwards.
The Open Category welcomes entries from professionals, freelancers, and students. It calls for new, unpublished work in any format that adheres to the theme “Inspiring Humanity Through Design.”

“Meaningful and purposeful design, in all its forms, is essential to support our challenged humanity. Our humanity could afford more solutions, more inspiration, and more care in order to uplift our quality of life and restore dignity for those deprived,” explained adobo magazine founder, president, and editor-in-chief Angel Guerrero.
adobo magazine Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Janelle Barretto-Squires emphasized their desire for students to join the competition, with the organizers sponsoring entries submitted by students.

This year’s competition will be judged by an esteemed panel of creatives, some of whom should be familiar to most people. Headed by D&AD President Bruce Duckworth, this year’s jury includes:
- multidisciplinary designer Patrick Cabral, known for his work in typography
- HMT Studios co-owner and Creative Director Harvey Tolibao, known for his work in the popular comic book lines DC and Marvel
- TBWA\Santiago Mangada Puno’s Associate Creative Director CJ Da Silva-Ong, known as a Promil Kid Gifted Child
- Dentsu Jayme Syfu’s Chairman and Chief Creative Officer Merlee Jayme, the first Filipino to be awarded The Creative of the Year for Southeast Asia in the Campaign Asia Pacific Agency of the Year awards.
- Owner and Creative Director of The Acid House, Ivan Despi
Other notable names include Team Manila’s Jowee Alviar, Dentsu Inc., Tokyo’s Yoshihiro Yagi, and Globe Studios’ Quark Henares.
This year’s call for entries started last February 2. Deadline for submission of entries is on March 11. The judging and exhibition of entries will take place on March 27 and 28, while the Grand Awards Night will take place on April 20.
