Duterte and Trump might just get along, political analysts say
President Rodrigo Duterte and US President-Elect Donald Trump may not be on the same boat when it comes to voicing their opinions on each other’s countries, but analysts say that they actually might get along with each other.
Political analyst Peter Wallace, in an interview in CNN’s The Source, said that Duterte and Trump are elected for, almost, the same reason. He said that the citizens want something different, something that will not just be mere promises coming out of the mouths of politicians.
“People want to have better action, better things done, not the promises of politicians,” Wallace added. He believes that this was the same reason that the people have in some of the most important events in this year’s politics: the victory of Trump and Duterte, and UK’s Brexit.
Dennis Coronacion, a Filipino political analyst, stated that he thinks there are no parallelisms between Trump and Duterte when it comes to profession and personal experience – with Trump being a businessman, and Duterte being Davao City’s mayor before becoming presidents.
However, Wallace and Coronacion agreed that the two presidents might get along with each other for the reason that they are both independent-minded mavericks when it comes to making decisions for their countries. They hope, however, that although they have a firm stand on issues related to economy and country-to-country relations, they will still be openminded and will listen to advisers who will counsel them as to which is the best for the country that they lead.
