After its premiere in 2016, Lisa Macuja-Elizalde’s first full-length choreographed play presents a light and happy Cinderella that will surely make both kids and adults alike laugh. This interpretation of the classic fairy tale features modern Cinderella with some sense of familiarity, wittiness, and comedy, and of course, gives off a slightly sentimental vibe–all these make for a delightful performance.

The performance also showcases the romance and enchantment aspect of the beloved fairy tale that will surely mesmerize the audience.

Cinderella, played by Ballet Manila’s principal artists Abigail Oliviero and Joan Emery Sia, is a kind-hearted young woman who endures the wicked ways of her stepmother (played by John Balagot) and stepsisters (alternately played by Jasmine Pia Dames and Rissa May Camaclang, and Nicole Barroso and Emma Harris).

With the help of her Fairy Godmother (Kong Ke Xin), Cinderella is able to attend the ball where she meets Prince Charming (principal danseur Rudy De Dios and soloist Mark Sumaylo). The prince goes on a quest to find her after leaving her glass slipper as she hurriedly departs at midnight.

The production is set to bewilder the audience with Cinderella’s transformation from soot girl to a princess who is ready to attend the palace’s grand ball, scene-stealing moments of tiny “animals” who transform into coachmen, footmen, and white horses, and the amazing dance sequences performed by the Ballet Manila cast.

In this production, Macuja-Elizade uses music from the Prokofiev score, melodies of Oscar Wallace from the 1950 animated film, and tunes from the musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein that are strung together with original sections by Roy de Valle, a composer and musical arranger.

Cinderella is part of Ballet Manila’s 23rd performance season “Tour de Force” and is the third production following Iconic 1.0, Iconic 2.0 and Le Corsaire.
