  • Dubbed as the walled city in Manila, Intramuros is an ideal spot to further understand and appreciate Philippine history. This place will make you reminisce of the Spanish era’s historic past as Intramuros is surrounded by museums, churches, and restaurants.

Another destination that just opened in the walled city is Fort Santiago Dungeons, which can be visited every day from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The dungeon is accessible to those who purchase the Fort Santiago entrance fee. The ticket costs Php 75 for adults and Php50 for students, seniors, and PWDs.

Fort Santiago was built between 1589 and 1592, known for being the headquarters of several foreign powers in Philippine history such as the Spanish, the British, the Americans, and the Japanese.

The dungeon is originally built to store ammunition and gunpowder during the Spanish occupation. The Spanish soldiers then built a new storage area on higher ground, which serves as prison cells.

In 1896, the country’s national hero was detained at the fort’s dungeon before his execution in Luneta Park. Here, he penned his notable poem, Mi Ultimo Adios or “My Final Farewell.”

As a matter of fact, the walled city also features the golden footsteps of Dr. Jose Rizal. This marks his footsteps going to Bagumbayan on the day he was going to be executed.

Of course, there are also other itineraries that you should check out when you visit the historical landmark, Intramuros such as Fort Santiago, Baluarte De San Diego, Destileria Limtuaco Museum, Rizal Shrine, Casa Manila, San Agustin Museum, Bahay Tsinoy, iMake History Fortress, and Bagumbayan Light and Sound Museum.

If you’re looking for activities without hurting your wallet, you can visit the Manila Cathedral Basilica, Instituto Cervantes De Manila, Fr. George J. Willnabb Sj Museum, Museo De Intramuros, NCCA Gallery, and Likha-an Center for Philippine Living Traditions for free!

Indeed, Intramuros is one of the most remarkable places in the country as it reflects the significant events of the past.
