  • Presumptive President-elect Rodrigo Duterte may have struck another nerve with the Filipino people in saying he will allow the remains of the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos to be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Heroes’ Cemetery).

In a press briefing held on Monday, May 23, Duterte said he will allow the burial of the late dictator “not because he is a hero but because he was a Filipino soldier, period.”

He added that the issue with the Marcos patriarch’s burial has created division amongst Filipinos. While he is unsure if it would unify Filipinos, he says the burial would at least erase one hatred from the Filipino people.

He also does not mind if the burial takes place on Marcos’ 99th birthday, September 11.

Duterte’s stand on having Marcos’s remains buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani was one of the things he promised during his campaign sorties in Ilocos.
