JAPAN TRAVEL: Awara Onsen in Fukui Prefecture
Fukui Prefecture is a place known for its tranquility thanks to the abundance of greenery, and no other city in the prefecture embodies this more than Awara Onsen, the region’s well-known hot spring city. It’s an agricultural city, with most of its surroundings taken over by rice paddies, mountains to the east, and the sea to the west. This makes it a perfect spot for hot springs or onsens, and the city is full of hotels that have open-air hot springs.
Awara Onsen’s hotels each take their spring water from their own source, which allows visitors of Awara Onsen to experience different types of hot springs, each with its own benefits. The city is also known for its fresh food, which happens to include the Echizen crab, a winter dish that even the Japanese Royal Family acknowledges as the best crab in Japan.
