In celebration of Ballet Philippines’ 50th year, this new retelling of the tale will feature the company’s homegrown talents, as well as stars from the Mariinsky Ballet.

It has been a part of the company’s repertoire since 1978, with music by Pyotr Illyich Tchaikovsky. Many international and local dancers have graced the stage to narrate this classic tale of love and magic.

Swan Lake is a timeless love story with elements of magic, tragedy, and romance. The performance is split into four acts and follows the lovely swan princess Odette and Prince Siegfried.

Under the spell of Baron Von Rothbart, Odette spends her days as a swan and her nights in her human form. As the couple falls in love with each other, Baron Rothbart begins to play his tricks and brings in his daughter, Odile into the fray. What happens next is a mix of confusion, forgiveness, and romance that ultimately leads to a happy ending.

Starring in the production is Ballet Philippines’ own Denise Parungao alongside Jemima Reyes as Odette and Odile. With them is Eugene Obille and Victor Maguad as Prince Siegfried, and Ronelson Yadao as Baron Von Rothbart.

Two performances will star Evgeny Ivanchenko and Elena Evseeva from the Mariinsky Ballet, taking place on the evening shows of August 30 and August 31.

The production will feature a set designed by Eduardo “Toto” Sicangco, who is an award-winning stage designer and illustrator for Broadway and Hollywood films. Ballet Philippines will also collaborate with the “Queen of Lighting Design” Jennifer Tipton, who has won numerous awards, including a Tony Award and two Drama Desk Awards for her designs.

Swan Lake was first performed in 1877 by Russia’s Bolshoi Ballet at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.

The choreography was later reworked by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov in 1895 for their performance in St. Petersburg, which has remained as one of the most popular versions. It later made its American debut in 1940 with a performance by the San Francisco Ballet.
