PELÍCULA 2018: The Best of Spanish Cinema
Updated October 1, 2018: Greenbelt 3 screening schedule from Oct. 4 to Oct. 14 is added.
Instituto Cervantes is rolling out the 17th edition of PELÍCULA from October 4 to 20, 2018 at Greenbelt 3, UP Diliman, and Instituto Cervantes Intramuros. This year, the Spanish Film Festival will screen more than 20 films featuring the best of contemporary Spanish cinema.
The films cover a wide range of genres such as romance (Los amores cobardes), comedy (Mi querida cofradía), documentary (Dancing Beethoven), adventure (Oro), children animation (Atrapa la bandera), adult animation (Memorias de un hombre en pijama), and drama (La novia). PELÍCULA will also show Latin American films from Argentina (Summit) and Cuba (Últimos días en La Habana).

Mi querida cofradía
Non-native Filipino speakers may not be aware that the Filipino term for film “pelikula” came from the Spanish “película” of the same meaning. Ever since PELÍCULA’s inception in 2002, it aimed to show the cultural ties between Spain and the Philippines by putting up joint Filipino-Spanish programs. This time, PELÍCULA 2018 collaborated with Cut Print Productions for the program Encuentros en el cine: Shorts from the Philippines and Spain. The program will feature ten recent Spanish shorts and premier two Filipino shorts: Alvin Belarmino’s The Gathering and Xian Lim’s Our Love Story.
A Tribute to Bergman
In honor of Swedish director Ingmar Bergman (1918-2007), through the Embassy of Sweden and the UP Film Institute, PELÍCULA 2018 will present the special section “Bergman in Spain” which will feature two of Bergman’s films (Strawberry Fields and Persona) as well as two Spanish films influenced by Bergman’s notion of cinema: Carlos Saura’s Cria Cuervos and Pedro Almodóvar’s Tacones lejanos (High Heels).

Audience Choice Award
Atrapa la bandera
Lastly, audiences should not pass up PELÍCULA’s Audience Choice Award which is a staple of every PELÍCULA. For the duration of the festival, the audience will be given stubs where they can rate the films they’ve seen. The audience is qualified to join the raffle for every five films they’ve watched. Up for grabs is a round-trip ticket to Spain. Meanwhile, the winning entry will be re-shown on October 14, 2018, at Greenbelt 3 then at Instituto Cervantes Intramuros on October 20, 2018, for PELÍCULA Fin de Fiesta.
