UP Film Center Screens ‘The Kingmaker’ on January 29
The University of the Philippines Film Center along with Dakila and Active Vista will organize an on-campus screening of “The Kingmaker” on January 29, 2020 at Cine Adarna, UP Film Center.
Directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Lauren Greenfield, the critically-acclaimed documentary focuses on Imelda Marcos, the former first lady of the Philippines. She is the wife of the dictator president, Ferdinand Marcos whose rule was tainted with atrocities including human rights violation and widespread corruption.
“The Kingmaker” highlights Imelda’s confident rewriting of the Marcos family’s disturbing legacy with a narrative of a matriarch’s extravagant love for her country.
It was in 2014 that Greenfield started to conduct interviews and recorded verité clips with the former first lady, discussing her efforts to rebuild the family to power in the Philippines, as well as filmed Bongbong Marcos’ 2016 vice-presidential campaign.
At the same time, the filmmaker also interviewed Marcos regime victims including former Martial Law detainees and an elder Calauit resident who had been evicted from the island to make way for the Marcos’ private menagerie.
“The Kingmaker” first premiered at the 2019 Venice Film Festival and had screenings at the 2019 Telluride, Toronto, and London Film Festivals—the first documentary film to be invited to all four of these top festivals. It also bagged Writers Guild Nomination, three Critics’ Choice Nominations, as well as the Critics’ Choice honor for the “Most Compelling Living Subject of a Documentary.”

A gala screening of “The Kingmaker” will also be happening on January 29, 2020 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
