SPACEFEST MALL EVENT SERIES
INTRODUCTION
Space science has always fascinated everyone since the dawn of mankind. From the numerous wonders of outer space to the technological advancements brought about by satellite technology, these fields have played a major role in the evolution of human knowledge and civilization. In addition, it also serves as a gateway to the other areas such as physics, chemistry, biology, engineering and mathematics. For kids and students, astronomy is a very popular topic due to the innate interest of young people about space. In the absence of an integrated astronomy subject in the formal education system, students learn about astronomy through informal methods such as television, outreach programs and school trips.
Since 2013, Regulus SpaceTech has been actively promoting space science education in the Philippines. This is in partnership with the Philippine Space Science Education Program (PSSEP) of the Science Education Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-SEI). Activities conducted in various areas of the country include hands-on modules, telescope viewing, planetarium session and water bottle rocket launching. These activities proved to be very appealing to kids and students.
EVENT DESCRIPTION
To further increase public awareness about astronomy and space science, Regulus SpaceTech developed a program called SpaceFest Mall Event Series to be held at the SM Mall of Asia from
August 2014 to February 2015. Each activity will be held for one weekend of every month and will focus on various space topics for kids from 5 to 15 years old. The activities will be held on scheduled
times for different age groups. Tickets can be bought prior to the session through SM Tickets or on site (subject to slot availability). Each session will be for 90 minutes and will be supervised by trained astronomy educators and communicators.
In addition, an astrophoto exhibition showcasing various celestial objects will also be included for the general public. A maximum of 40 high resolution astrophotos taken from international
telescopes will be open for everyone. Entrance tickets can be bought on site or through SM Tickets. These activities will also provide additional edutainment to mall-goers, increase foot traffic and
promote the SM Mall of Asia as a venue for entertainment and learning. It will also contribute to increasing the public’s awareness about the beauty of the Universe and the importance of space
science in our everyday lives.
