Motomachi is a treasure trove of all things architecturally beautiful\u2014a neighborhood where you\u2019ll find mostly Western styles. The whole town looks cinematic, with each slope dotted by picture-perfect structures making it all the more scenic. In this part of Hakodate, the streets feature an influence of the West, reminiscent of the past when it was one of the first areas that opened to international trade.<\/p>\n

Tourists go to Motomachi to do church-hopping, so those who want a quiet tour will love the ambiance in this side of Hakodate. It\u2019s an ideal location to do a walking tour as it has a contemplative atmosphere.<\/p>\n

Hakodate St. John’s Church<\/strong> is noticeable due to its cross-shaped construction that’s best seen atop Mt. Hakodate. The present structure of this church was rebuilt in 1921 after it caught fire back in 1878 in its first location in Suehiro-cho. It was then completed in 1979, influenced by the architectural style of medieval churches in Europe. Although the church is not open to the public, it’s an interesting spot to visit in the city.<\/p>\n

How to go to Motomachi
\nTake the tram at Hakdoate Station and\u00a0get off at Suehiro-cho Station. From there, you may start the walking tour which will only take a few minutes within Motomachi District.<\/p>\n
