There\u2019s a certain tradition in the city of Antipolo that most\u00a0devout overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) hardly miss out on\u2014a visit to Antipolo Cathedral<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"facade\"THE FIRST CHURCH IN ANTIPOLO. It\u2019s also the home of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Known formally as the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of Antipolo<\/strong>, it is the first church erected within the city. It is also referred to as the National Shrine of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage.<\/span><\/p>\n

The image of the Immaculate Conception is said to be the reason why Governor-General Juan Ni\u00f1o de Tabora was able to make the safest of voyages across the Pacific Ocean, coming all the way from Mexico. Since then, it has been one of the most celebrated images of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with a pilgrimage held every year during May.<\/span><\/p>\n

Moreover, thousands upon thousands of devotees make their way from Quiapo Church, home of the Black Nazarene, to Antipolo Cathedral on foot every year. Roads that go from Manila to Antipolo (usually the stretch of Ortigas Avenue) are closed to all vehicles during this pilgrimage. It takes place at night, with devotees being greeted by a mass at dawn.<\/span><\/p>\n

This tradition is popular among those who visit Antipolo as a blessing received from the church for any departing OFW is said to ensure a safe trip. New car owners also have their cars blessed at the Antipolo Cathedral as they believe it will give them a sort of \u201csafety blanket\u201d in every journey they will venture on.<\/span><\/p>\n
