It was only two days later when he appeared on television to formally announce it, citing threat of rebellion and communism as reason.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The period is by far one of the darkest in Philippine history as it is marked by thousands of killings, human rights violations, and extreme media censorship. Number of victims still remain unclear as thousands remain missing and unaccounted for.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And as a way to honor the martyrs and heroes who wholly offered their lives for the country\u2019s freedom, justice, and democracy during the period, <strong>Bantayog ng mga Bayani Foundation<\/strong> was formed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12787\" src=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/Bantayog-Wall-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Meaning monument to the heroes, Bantayog ng mga Bayani stands along <strong>Quezon Avenue in Quezon City<\/strong>. The seemingly unassuming building houses years of history, aimed to never let people forget the Martial Law era and the people who fought against it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Probably the most known feature of the memorial center, the <strong>35-foot Inang Bayan<\/strong> (motherland) sculpture by <strong>Eduardo Castrillo<\/strong> depicts a woman cradling a man, representing the Philippines and the fallen martyrs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12788\" src=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/Bantayog-Inang-Bayan.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/Bantayog-Inang-Bayan.jpg 800w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/Bantayog-Inang-Bayan-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/Bantayog-Inang-Bayan-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the open amphitheater behind the statue, on the other hand, is the <strong>Wall of Remembrance<\/strong>, which are slabs of black granite carved with names of heroes and martyrs who valiantly fought the Marcos regime in gold.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12789\" src=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/Bantayog-Wall-.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/Bantayog-Wall-.jpg 800w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/Bantayog-Wall--300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/Bantayog-Wall--768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Inside the two-story center is the <strong>Bantayog Library &amp; Archives, Hall of Remembrance, and Museo ng Bantayog<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">The first level is solely dedicated to the Bantayog Library &amp; Archives, where documents, newspapers, magazines, books, references, and other relevant materials to the period can be found.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On the right side of the second level is where the Hall of Remembrance is located. It details more on the lives of the martyrs and heroes whose names can be found on the Wall of Remembrance. It is divided according to their professions like students, labor workers, and religious members.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">To the left is the Museo ng Bantayog or the Bantayog Museum, which narrates the events from pre-Martial Law era leading to its end in 1986.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12786\" src=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/Bantayog-Museum.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/Bantayog-Museum.jpg 800w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/Bantayog-Museum-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/Bantayog-Museum-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The museum has photographs, documents, and other artifacts that help people better understand the happenings and atrocities of the Martial Law era.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"534\" height=\"800\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12785\" src=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/Bantayog-Selda.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/Bantayog-Selda.jpg 534w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/Bantayog-Selda-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 534px) 100vw, 534px\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><em>Inside the museum is a depiction of a cell of a political prisoner during Martial Law<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There is also a small theater room in the center\u2014the <strong>Ambassador Alfonso T. Yuchengco Auditorium<\/strong> is where film showings and programs organized by the foundation is held.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It is best to visit the memorial center with a guide to have a better understanding of the artifacts inside. Bantayog offers guided tours from <strong>Tuesday to Friday<\/strong> at <strong>9 a.m. to 11 a.m.<\/strong> and at <strong>2 p.m. to 4 p.m.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>How to get here<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Bantayog ng mga Bayani is located along the stretch of Quezon Avenue.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">From EDSA, take a bus going to UE Letre and get off at Eton Centris.
