People may still come down with <em>lagnat <\/em>or go to work even if they have <em>sipon<\/em>. (Image from healthway.com.ph via <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.positivelyfilipino.com\/magazine\/one-very-easy-way-to-live-longer\"><em>Positively Filipino<\/em><\/a><em>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">To make sense of all of these, here are a few medical terms to help you out (including the ones we just mentioned):<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><em><strong>Ngalay<\/strong> \u2013 numb.<\/em> Often felt by our more senior associates, it also occurs in the younger generation if they\u2019ve been stuck in one position for too long.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><em><strong>Masakit<\/strong> \u2013 painful.<\/em> Again, this one\u2019s self explanatory. It\u2019s not to be confused with<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><em><strong>May sakit<\/strong> \u2013 is ill.<\/em> It\u2019s what we Filipinos say when we\u2019re sick, regardless if we know what it is or not. Oftentimes, we go to our<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><strong><em>Doktor\/Duktor\/Manggagamot<\/em> <\/strong><em>\u2013 doctor <\/em>for a check-up. After that, we get a<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><em><strong>Reseta <\/strong>\u2013 medical prescription.<\/em> This, of course, contains a list of<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><em><strong>Gamot \u2013 <\/strong>medicine<\/em> we will take for whatever illness we may have, the most common of which is<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><em><strong>Trangkaso <\/strong>\u2013 flu<\/em>, especially if you work long hours outdoors where conditions can change so quick you won\u2019t have time to blink. It\u2019s symptoms are often a combination of body pains with<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><em><strong>Lagnat<\/strong> \u2013 fever<\/em>. This one\u2019s simple enough to understand. It\u2019s often accompanied by<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><em><strong>Sipon <\/strong>\u2013 colds<\/em>. A common wet season sickness, people often choose to go to work even if they have a cold. They usually carrying a pack of tissues to wipe off their<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><em><strong>Uhog \u2013 <\/strong>running phlegm<\/em>. <em>Inuuhog,<\/em> on the other hand, is the term we Filipinos use for a runny nose, and its \u201cbrother\u201d is<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><em><strong>Ubo \u2013 <\/strong>cough<\/em>.
