The musical is inspired by Shakespeares\u2019 Romeo and Juliet,<\/em> about a rival of two irreconcilable teenage gangs which take place in the 1950s New York. The story revolves around a former gang member named Tony who fell in love with the sister of the Puerto Rican gang, Maria. It is known for songs like \u201cMaria\u201d , \u201cTonight\u201d, and \u201cI Feel Pretty.\u201d<\/p>\n

The musical has sold-out seasons around the globe, from London to Tokyo, and Syndney to Johannesburg. It was also nominated for Best Musical in the 1958 Tony Awards and 1958 Theater World Awards.<\/p>\n
