Then head for the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) tomorrow, May 4 at 1:00 pm, to celebrate the 100<sup>th<\/sup> birthday of the one and only Nick Joaqu\u00edn. Oh, and did we mention it was free?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7832\" src=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/event\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/05\/1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/event\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/05\/1-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/event\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/05\/1-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><i>MOST DISTINGUISHED FILIPINO WRITER. His works may be in English, but his works talk more about the Philippines and Filipinos more.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Called \u201cNick Joaqu\u00edn. He Lives.\u201d, the celebration will see the esteemed National Artist for Literature featured in a number of ways: from viewing a feature film about Nick Joaqu\u00edn to interpretations of his works, expect to have as much of Nick Joaqu\u00edn as you will be able to handle.<\/p>\n<p>Events to commemorate the National Artist will include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A screening of Sari Dalena\u2019s film <strong>Dahling Nick<\/strong> at the CCP Tanghalang Manuel Conde (Dream Theater) at 1:00pm<\/li>\n<li>An opening ceremony of the celebration at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (Little Theater) at 4:15pm highlighted by the following:\n<ul>\n<li>A dance performance entitled <strong>Amada<\/strong> by Ballet Philippines<\/li>\n<li>Poetry reading by writer Pete Lacaba<\/li>\n<li>A theatrical presentation of an excerpt of Nick Joaqu\u00edn\u2019s <strong>How Love Came to Juan Tamad<\/strong>, and<\/li>\n<li>The unveiling of Nick Joaqu\u00edn\u2019s Portrait and Commemorative Stamp Design<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aparador ni Quijano de Manila<\/strong>, an exhibition featuring personal items and portraits of the said National Artist, will open at 5:30pm at the Pasilyong Victorio Edades.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Small Beer<\/strong>, an informal discussion about Nick Joaqu\u00edn\u2019s life and works, will follow at the Atrium and 4th Floor Hallway at 6:00pm.\n<ul>\n<li>Small Beer will also include the launching of <strong>The Woman Who Had Two Navels<\/strong> and <strong>Tales of the Tropical Gothic<\/strong>, published by Penguin Random House.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Nick Joaqu\u00edn Book Fair<\/strong>, led by Anvil Publishing and National Book Store, will be held at the CCP Little Theater Lobby and 4th Floor Hallway.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nick Joaqu\u00edn was named National Artist of the Philippines in the field of literature in 1976, the highest recognition given by the state for an artist in the country. He was regarded by many as the most distinguished Filipino writer in English writing so variedly and so well about so many aspects of the Filipino.<\/p>\n<p>Some of his biggest works include \u201cThe Woman Who Had Two Navels,\u201d \u201cA Portrait of the Artist as Filipino,\u201d \u201cManila, My Manila: A History for the Young,\u201d \u201cThe Ballad of the Five Battles,\u201d \u201cRizal in Saga,\u201d \u201cAlmanac for Manile\u00f1os,\u201d and \u201cCave and Shadows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aside from his handling of language, National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera writes that Nick Joaquin\u2019s significance in Philippine literature involves his exploration of the Philippine colonial past under Spain and his probing into the psychology of social changes as seen by the young, shown in some of his stories including \u201cDo\u00f1a Jeronima,\u201d \u201cCandido\u2019s Apocalypse,\u201d and \u201cThe Order of Melchizedek.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also enriched the English language with critics coining \u201cJoaquinesque\u201d to describe his baroque Spanish-flavored English and through his reinventions of English based on Filipinisms. He wrote plays, novels, poems, short stories, and essays including reportage and journalism.
