It is rare that you find a group that is as consistently relevant and acoustically evolving in a time of cross-genre confusion and three-minute, sugar-coated and over-produced junk.<\/p>\n<p>Thank God for the Goo Goo Dolls.<\/p>\n<p>Responsible for some of the biggest, chart-topping singles in the 90s, like \u201cName\u201d (1995, <em>A Boy Named Goo<\/em>); the humongous and now-historic \u201cIris\u201d &#8211; which originally appeared on the <em>City of Angels Movie Soundtrack<\/em>,\u00a0was<em>\u00a0<\/em>nominated for three Grammy Awards (Record of the Year, Best Pop Performance, and Song of The Year), and spent a whopping 18 weeks at number one on <em>Billboard<\/em>\u2019s Hot 100 Airplay chart; \u201cBlack Balloon\u201d and \u201cSlide\u201d, off of 1998\u2019s four-time platinum release <em>Dizzy Up The Girl<\/em>; all the way to\u00a0recent hits like \u201cBefore It\u2019s Too Late\u201d (from the first <em>Transformers<\/em> movie OST at the start of the millennium), it\u2019s clear to see why the band \u2013 led by frontman\/main songwriter\/guitarist John Rzeznik \u2013 is easily hailed as one of the most successful hit-making machines the world has ever seen and heard.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6270\" src=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/event\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/01\/aa.jpg\" alt=\"aa\" srcset=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/event\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/01\/aa.jpg 533w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/event\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/01\/aa-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 533px) 100vw, 533px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The band\u2019s connection with its legion of Filipino fans is a strong one: Rzeznik \u2013\u00a0along with longtime bassist-collaborator Robby Takac and the rest of the band \u2013 definitely has a strong penchant for indelible melodies, intimate and heartfelt lyricism, and a generally uplifting and anthemic vibe from their music throughout the decades. Celebrating their 30<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary as a group in 2016, they \u2013 though earning a reputation for producing some of the biggest singles for some of the biggest films in history \u2013 refuse to be boxed-in with a singular sound and approach to music. This was evident early on in their career, incorporating clever guitar tunings, sing-along-melodies and odd-timed rhythm patterns to their music.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the millennium, they\u2019ve consistently released new music, like <em>Gutterflower <\/em>(2002), <em>Let Love In\u00a0<\/em>(2006), <em>Something For The Rest of Us\u00a0<\/em>(2010), <em>Magnetic\u00a0<\/em>(2013),\u00a0and their most recent 2016 opus <em>Boxes<\/em>, which finds Rzeznik and the band collaborating with various songwriters, producing some of their most personal, introspective work to date, fueled by the single \u201cSo Alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want people to listen [to the music] hard. I want them to read the lyrics. I want them to be ecstatic and I want them to cry. I want them, at the end of it, to feel satisfied,\u201d says Rzeznik of their latest album, and in more ways than one, their collected body of work. \u201cI want them to take a little piece of it for themselves and own it. Make it their own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fans in Manila are all too happy to oblige. They are already excited that the Goo Goo Dolls are bringing their music to Manila \u2013 definitely a long-overdue musical spectacle. Expect the roar of thousands of Filipino fans singing along to their personal favorites to be beautifully deafening.<\/p>\n<p>Goo Goo Dolls: Live in Manila is slated to happen on February 11, 2017 at the famed Smart Araneta Coliseum.
