He\u2019s the country\u2019s most renowned comic book artist, with most of his works having made it to the big screen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4389\" src=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/event\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/09\/welcome_marked.jpg\" alt=\"welcome_marked\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Popular as his works may be, no one really knows the man behind these hits. Members of the Ravelo family and some of the artists who made the pieces were present during the press huddle. <em>Ang Gerilya <\/em>and <em>Kris Abrigo <\/em>were on hand to continue work on their murals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"789\" height=\"850\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4388\" src=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/event\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/09\/Maisha-Dela-Cruz_marked.jpg\" alt=\"maisha-dela-cruz_marked\" srcset=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/event\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/09\/Maisha-Dela-Cruz_marked.jpg 789w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/event\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/09\/Maisha-Dela-Cruz_marked-278x300.jpg 278w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/event\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/09\/Maisha-Dela-Cruz_marked-768x827.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 789px) 100vw, 789px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Primer got the chance to speak with Maisha dela Cruz, one of the exhibiting artists and a 3<sup>rd<\/sup>-generation Ravelo, about her grandfather\u2019s work, particularly the stylistic difference between Filipino <em>komiks<\/em> and Japanese manga.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><strong>Komiks vs. Manga<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">According to dela Cruz, drawing style is one of the striking differences between <em>komiks<\/em> and manga. \u201cKomiks look more westernized compared to manga, which has retained its identity through the years,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"567\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4387\" src=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/event\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/09\/IMG_0636_marked.jpg\" alt=\"img_0636_marked\" srcset=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/event\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/09\/IMG_0636_marked.jpg 850w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/event\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/09\/IMG_0636_marked-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/event\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/09\/IMG_0636_marked-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">The distinct drawing styles of western comic books, especially in superhero comics, have been adapted by most comic book artists during Ravelo\u2019s time, whereas Japanese manga usually has an element of exaggeration in its characters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">She also spoke about her grandfather\u2019s influence, saying he has seen comics before he started drawing and writing them, citing <em>Kenkoy<\/em> by Tony Velasquez as one of the first <em>komiks<\/em> in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u201cHe\u2019s also a part of the general public, plus he loves to draw and write. His works usually depict the everyday Filipino: wearing <em>pambahay<\/em> and informal dialogue often laced with expletives,\u201d she added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><strong>Mars Ravelo: The Man<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"567\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4390\" src=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/event\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/09\/IMG_0594_marked.jpg\" alt=\"img_0594_marked\" srcset=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/event\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/09\/IMG_0594_marked.jpg 850w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/event\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/09\/IMG_0594_marked-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/event\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/09\/IMG_0594_marked-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Dela Cruz said that her grandfather was different from other comic book artists of the time because of the topics he chose to write about, as well as his unique take on who to focus on. \u201cHe\u2019s one of the first to explore sexuality. <em>Facifica Falayfay<\/em> was the first openly gay comic book characters in a time when gays weren\u2019t accepted in society.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">She also said her Lolo Mars is into sci-fi, especially aliens. \u201cHe never had the chance to write about aliens, though,\u201d she jokingly added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Mars Ravelo also focused more on the villains than the heroes of his <em>komiks<\/em>. \u201cTake Darna for example. Darna only appeared in the first and last couple of issues, but the rest of the series looked more into <em>Valentina, Darna\u2019s <\/em>archenemy,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Primer also spoke with Mrs. Gina Marasigan, Mr. Zaldy Ravelo, Mrs. Ruby Austria (children of Mars Ravelo), and Ms. Francine Ravelo (granddaughter), who said that the clan has plans to release a collector\u2019s issue of his best works<em>komiks<\/em> as well as strengthen the brand that is Mars Ravelo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">They said that Mars Ravelo made a comic book that\u2019s unique and appealed to Filipinos because instead of tackling topics related to the war, he instead focused on how normal Filipinos lived. \u201cHis stories showed extraordinary people living in normal situations, focusing solely on Filipinos,\u201d said Francine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">His children and grandchildren also hope that through exhibits like Mars Ravelo Reinterpreted, people will come to know more about Mars Ravelo and his other works.
