The University of the Philippines (UP)<\/strong>, through the UP Center for International Studies (UPCIS)<\/strong>, will commemorate the 70th Anniversary of Philippines\u2013Japan Diplomatic Relations<\/strong> with Noh theater performances<\/strong> on December 6, 7, <\/strong>and 9 <\/strong>in Quezon City <\/strong>and Makati City<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Organized in partnership with the Embassy of Japan in Manila<\/strong> and The Japan Foundation Manila<\/strong>, the program will feature the original FilipiNoh production Ransh\u014d: Paglusong sa Sigwa (Soaring Through the Storm)<\/strong> alongside the classical Noh piece<\/strong> Shakkyo (The Stone Bridge)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The project brings together the UPCIS Noh Ensemble, university students, professional artists, and nine Noh masters from Japan<\/strong>.\u00a0 Noh<\/em> <\/strong>is one of Japan’s oldest theatrical traditions<\/strong> and is recognized by UNESCO <\/strong>as an Important Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The commemorative activities will begin with a 30-minute press preview in August<\/strong>, introducing visiting Japanese Noh Grand Masters Mr.<\/strong> Umewaka Chozaemon<\/strong>, a shite kata<\/em> or principal actor of the Kanze school, and Mr. \u014cmura Shigeji<\/strong>, an \u014dtsuzumi kata<\/em> or big drum performer of the \u014ckura school.<\/p>\n

Both are\u00a0recognized in Japan as Holders of Important Intangible Cultural Property in Noh Theater<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The performances on December 6 and 7 at 3:00 p.m.<\/strong> will be held at the UP Theatre, UP Diliman<\/strong>. An exhibition of Edo-period Noh costumes and masks<\/strong> will accompany the performances. Another performance will take place on December 9 at 6:30 p.m.<\/strong> at Carlos P. Romulo Hall, RCBC Plaza in Makati City<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Admission is<\/strong> free<\/strong>, while details on the ticketing system have yet to be announced.<\/p>\n

Established in 2005<\/strong>, the UPCIS Noh Ensemble<\/strong> has trained Filipino students and performers in Noh dance, chant, flute, and drums<\/strong> for more than two decades.<\/p>\n

In 2006<\/strong>, UP also commemorated the 50th Anniversary of Philippines\u2013Japan Diplomatic Relations<\/strong> with performances of Okina<\/strong> and Dance of Sisa<\/strong> from National Artist Amelia Lape\u00f1a-Bonifacio’s<\/strong> Ang Paglalakbay ni Sisa: Isang Noh sa Laguna<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
