Top-billing the 155 lots are two magnificent works by National Artist <\/span>H R Ocampo <\/b>(1911-1978), one of the 13 Moderns. The very important \u201cTempo Rubato\u201d<\/em> (22\u201dx28\u201d, oil on canvas, signed and dated 1949 lower right) and the captivating \u201cHomage to A Lady\u201d<\/em> (24\u201dx36\u201d, oil on canvas, signed and dated 1967 lower right and verso).<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"Tempo Rubato by HR Ocampo<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Tempo Rubato<\/b>, literally \u201cRobbed Time\u201d, is a carnival of colors and forms that alludes to the discretionary freedom taken by musicians to make music that is more expressive, natural, and free. Indeed, this piece is a testimony to lost time for being representative of the artist\u2019s transition to Neorealism, for being a milestone that marked the period after his detainment, and for being a loving paean to his wife, who passed on during his incarceration.<\/span><\/p>\n

Homage to A Lady<\/b>, on the other hand, is a swirling gem of emerald and citrine facets that came as a gift from then First Lady Imelda R. Marcos. It was painted in the same year Ocampo painted his most important work, \u201cGenesis\u201d, which hangs at the Main Theater of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. <\/span><\/p>\n

It is a testament to Ocampo\u2019s renown as the Father of Philippine Modern Abstraction.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other resplendent works from the 13 Moderns and the pioneers of Philippine Neo-Realism are \u201cMiners\u201d<\/em> (63.5\u201dx62\u201d, oil on wood, signed and dated 1979 lower right) by\u00a0National Artist <\/span>Cesar Legaspi <\/b>(1917-1994); \u201cNew York\u201d<\/em> (40\u201dx28\u201d, oil on panel, signed and dated 1951 lower right) by filmmaker-artist\u00a0<\/span>Ramon Estella <\/b>(1911-1991); and, \u201cFirst Homage to Salvia\u201d<\/em> (33.5\u201dx16.5\u201d, oil on canvas, signed and dated 1954 verso) by\u00a0<\/span>Victor Oteyza <\/b>(1913-1979).<\/span><\/p>\n

On June 17, 1950, Ocampo, Legaspi, Estella, Oteyza, and Romeo V. Tabuena had their first public exhibit at the Manila Hotel\u2019s Rotary Room courtesy of the Art Association of the Philippines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"Macario Vitalis – Barrio Fiesta<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Unique works also include \u201cBarrio Fiesta\u201d<\/em> (37\u201dx58.75\u201d, oil on canvas, signed and dated 1964 verso), a pointillist work done without mixing colors on the canvas, by <\/span>Macario Vitalis <\/b>(1898-1990) from Ilocos Sur; \u201cUntitled\u201d<\/em> (18\u201dx24\u201d, oil on panel, signed and dated 1960 upper left), a poetic gestural color rendition of the Filipino soul, by National Artist Dean\u00a0<\/span>Jose Joya <\/b>(1931-1995) from Manila; and, \u201cLinear No. 36\u201d<\/em> (36\u201dx36\u201d, AquaTec on marine plywood, signed and dated March 18, 1966 verso), play on light and shadow done using centuries-old gesso techniques used in preparing wood for religious icons, by\u00a0<\/span>Lee Aguinaldo <\/b>(1933-2007) from New York.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"Homage to Turing – BenCab<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Spectacular gems from the living are the monochromatic abstractions of Sabel with red and white accents honoring Arturo Luz in \u201cHomage to Turing\u201d<\/em> (45\u201dx84\u201d, acrylic on canvas, signed and dated 2006 lower right) by National Artist\u00a0<\/span>Benedicto<\/b> \u201c<\/span>BenCab\u201d Cabrera <\/b>(b.1942); the strong green muscular women in \u201cBold with Passion\u201d<\/em> (58\u201dx32\u201dx1.5\u201d, oil on wood, signed and dated 2019 lower left) by\u00a0<\/span>Lydia Velasco <\/b>(b.1942); and, the satirical living room commentary in \u201cIndoor Living II\u201d<\/em> (36\u201dx60\u201d, mixed media on canvas, signed and dated 2016 lower right) by\u00a0<\/span>Richard Quebral <\/b>(b.1989). <\/span><\/p>\n

Also featured is a fascinating bucolic scene called \u201cA Farmhouse in Normandy\u201d<\/em> (7.5\u201dx9.5\u201d, oil on board, signed lower right c1900) by\u00a0<\/span>F<\/b>\u00e9<\/b>lix Resurrecci\u00f3n Hidalgo <\/b>(1855-1913) from the collection of Batangue<\/span>\u00f1<\/span>o Antonio \u201cTony\u201d Meer, the direct descendant of hero General Miguel Malvar.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, two works from the\u00a0<\/span>School of F<\/span>\u00e9<\/span>lix Resurreccion Hidalgo<\/span>\u00a0pay homage to the prize-winning Filipino art luminary<\/span>:\u00a0<\/span>\u201cAfter Hidalgo, El Pescador de Sucag\u201d<\/b><\/em>\u00a0(26\u201dx44\u201d, oil on canvas, signed by Castellon and dated 1886 lower right) and\u00a0<\/span>\u201cAfter Hidalgo, La Blanca\u201d<\/b><\/em>\u00a0(26\u201dx44\u201d, oil on canvas, signed by Castellon and dated 1886 lower right).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These riverine compositions from a private collection in Bilbao, Spain are products of the classical art academy training of copying the works of the masters.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"Felix Hidalgo – A Farmhouse in Normandy<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Opulent works by National Artists for the Visual Arts <\/span>Fernando Amorsolo<\/b>, Victorio Edades, Ang Kiukok, Arturo Luz, Vicente Manansala, and Jerry Elizalde Navarro\u00a0are on the block alongside luminous pieces from masters Oscar Zalameda, Mauro Malang Santos, Nena Saguil, Alfonso Ossorio, and Antipas Delotavo.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Monumental works by contemporary stars Annie Cabigting, Norman Dreo, Nona Garcia, Emmanuel Garibay, and\u00a0Yasmin Sison also grace this yearend sale.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alongside artworks are equally remarkable finds: an 18<\/span>th<\/span>-century ivory <\/span>La Sagrada Familia<\/span><\/i> from the Don Antonio Bantug Collection, a late 19<\/span>th<\/span>-century <\/span>molave Hagabi<\/span><\/i> or Ifugao Prestige Bench from the Osmundo Esguerra Collection, and a historic Christmas letter of Juna Luna to his son, Andres Luna.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
