From October 3 to 11, 2020<\/strong>, the 19th<\/sup>\u00a0edition of PEL\u00cdCULA Spanish Film Festival<\/strong> will feature the best of contemporary Spanish cinema. Presented by Instituto Cervantes and the Embassies of Spain in the Philippines, Thailand, and Australia, the 2020 Spanish Film Festival will screen online eight feature films and four short films.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Since its conception in 2002 by Instituto Cervantes de Manila, the Spanish Film Festival has been an annual attraction\u00a0in Philippine cinemas.\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0COVID-19 crisis has posed the greatest challenge in the history of the Festival,\u00a0and\u00a0PEL\u00edCULA\u00a0responds by\u00a0offering\u00a0online\u00a0screenings and webinars.<\/p>\n

Even better, PEL\u00edCULA is\u00a0expanding\u00a0to two other countries, thus covering three countries in the region: the\u00a0Philippines,\u00a0Thailand\u00a0and\u00a0Australia.<\/p>\n

Each\u00a0<\/span>movie\u00a0will be available for viewing for free\u00a0at\u00a0pelikula.es<\/a><\/u><\/b>\u00a0for 24 hours, starting at 6 pm in the Philippines and Thailand<\/strong> and 8 pm in Australia<\/strong>, on the programmed screening date.<\/p>\n

\"\"La filla d\u2019alg\u00fa\u00a0(2019)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The Festival will open on October 3 with\u00a0La filla d\u2019alg\u00fa\u00a0<\/i>(2019), a film directed by eleven students from the Escuela Superior de Cine y Audiovisuales de Catalu\u00f1a. <\/span><\/p>\n

Other movies in this year\u2019s line-up are\u00a0El incre\u00edble finde menguante\u00a0<\/i>(Jon Mikel Caballero, 2019), the comedy\u00a0Asamblea<\/i>\u00a0(Alex Montoya, 2019), and dramas\u00a0<\/span>like\u00a0Jaulas<\/i>\u00a0(Nicol\u00e1s Pacheco, 2018), and\u00a0Arima<\/i>\u00a0(<\/span>Jaione Camborda, 2019<\/span>).<\/span><\/p>\n

Likewise, there will be\u00a0<\/span>documentaries such as\u00a0Mudar la piel<\/i>\u00a0(Ana Schulz and Crist\u00f3bal Fern\u00e1ndez, 2018), and\u00a0El cuadro\u00a0<\/i>(Andr\u00e9s Sanz, 2019).\u00a0<\/span>PEL\u00cdCULA will also feature Latin American cinema, with one film from Costa Rica,\u00a0El despertar de las hormigas\u00a0<\/i>(Antonella Sudassasi, 2019).<\/span><\/p>\n

Aside from online screenings,\u00a0webinars\u00a0and online discussions are also programmed. Within Cineclub PEL\u00edCULA<\/strong>, Jessica Zafra will moderate several online discussions about films screened in the Festival,\u00a0with the participation of the directors of the movies.<\/p>\n

On October 5<\/strong> there will be a round-table discussion about \u201cMarketing Asian Cinema in Europe and Spanish Cinema in Asia\u201d<\/strong>; and on October 9<\/strong>, the directors of Spanish, Thai, and Filipino major film festivals will hold a discussion to answer the question: \u201cAny Future for Film Festivals?\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Encounters through short films<\/span><\/h3>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>Tagalog word “pelikula” comes from the Spanish \u201cpel\u00edcula\u201d (film), which is proof of the deep cultural ties shared between the Philippines and Spain.<\/p>\n

With this spirit in mind, since its first editions, PEL\u00cdCULA had among its main objectives\u00a0to\u00a0organize joint Spanish-Filipino programs that could foster dialogue and\u00a0joint\u00a0projects between filmmakers from the Philippines and the Spanish-speaking world.<\/p>\n

Under a similar approach, on October 10<\/strong>, PEL\u00cdCULA will offer “En corto: Short Films from the Philippines, Thailand, Australia and Spain”<\/strong>, in which four recent short films, one from each country, will be featured, and their directors will take part in an online discussion\u00a0afterward.<\/p>\n

Audience Choice Award<\/span><\/h3>\n

Last but not least, film buffs should not miss the yearly \u201cAudience Choice\u201d Award.\u00a0<\/span>Established\u00a0in 2004, the Premio del P\u00fablico<\/strong> (Audience Choice Award) recognizes in each edition the film that PEL\u00edCULA viewers have voted as the best of the Festival. A popular feature of the Festival among the attending public, it will still remain in 2020, adapting it to the new condition of online festival.<\/p>\n

Viewers will be given stubs where they can rate the movie they have seen online. The winning movie will be\u00a0screened once again\u00a0on October 11, 6 pm, at the Festival\u2019s platform\u00a0<\/span>pelikula.es<\/a><\/span><\/u>.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

PEL\u00cdCULA is presented by Instituto Cervantes through Instituto Cervantes in Manila and Instituto Cervantes in Sydney, the Embassies of Spain in the Philippines, Thailand, and Australia, and AECID,\u00a0with the collaboration of the ICAA, the M\u00e1laga Film Festival, the\u00a0<\/span>Thai Film Archive, the Sydney Film Festival, the Travelling Film Festival,\u00a0Intramuros\u00a0Administration,\u00a0the Film Development Council of the Philippines, and\u00a0the\u00a0UP Film Institute.<\/span><\/p>\n
