The University of the Philippines Film Center<\/strong> along with Dakila and Active Vista will organize an on-campus screening of “The Kingmaker”<\/strong>\u00a0on January 29, 2020<\/strong> at Cine Adarna<\/strong>, UP Film Center<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Lauren Greenfield<\/strong>, the critically-acclaimed documentary\u00a0focuses on Imelda Marcos<\/strong>, the former first lady of the Philippines. She is the wife of the dictator president, Ferdinand Marcos whose rule was tainted with atrocities including human rights violation and widespread corruption.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Kingmaker\u201d highlights Imelda\u2019s confident rewriting of the Marcos family\u2019s disturbing legacy with a narrative of a matriarch\u2019s extravagant love for her country.<\/p>\n

It was in 2014 that\u00a0Greenfield started to conduct interviews and recorded verit\u00e9 clips with the former first lady, discussing her efforts to rebuild the family to power in the Philippines,\u00a0as well as filmed Bongbong Marcos\u2019 2016 vice-presidential campaign.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the filmmaker also interviewed Marcos regime victims including former Martial Law detainees and an elder Calauit resident who had been evicted from the island to make way for the Marcos\u2019 private menagerie.<\/p>\n

“The Kingmaker” first premiered at the 2019 Venice Film Festival and had screenings\u00a0at the 2019 Telluride, Toronto, and London Film Festivals\u2014the first documentary film to be invited to all four of these top festivals. It also bagged\u00a0Writers Guild Nomination, three Critics\u2019 Choice Nominations, as well as the Critics\u2019 Choice honor for the \u201cMost Compelling Living Subject of a Documentary.\u201d<\/p>\n
