In partnership with the Philippine Center of International PEN and Fully Booked, The Japan Foundation Manila announced a series of talks with award-winning Japanese literary translator\u00a0Ginny Tapley Takemori<\/strong> on contemporary Japanese literature.<\/p>\n

The first talk is happening on\u00a0October 3, 2019 <\/strong>at\u00a0the 85th PEN International Congress Manila<\/strong> in\u00a0National Museum of Fine Arts, Manila<\/strong>, while the second is on October 5<\/strong>\u00a0at The Studio, Fully Booked\u00a0Bonifacio High Street<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"\"Ginny Takemori<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Takemori has translated more than a dozen works from early modern and contemporary Japanese writers, with some from authors\u00a0Kyoka Izumi, Kido Okamoto, Ryu Murakami<\/strong>, and Miyuki Miyabe<\/strong>. Her translations have also appeared in Words Without Borders, Granta<\/strong>, and a number of anthologies.<\/p>\n

Takemori was also shortlisted for the Marsh Award<\/strong> for her translation of Tomiko Inui’s The Secret of the Blue Glass. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Additionally,\u00a0her translation of the Akutagawa price-winning novel\u00a0Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata<\/strong> was one of the New Yorker’s best books of 2018, Foyle’s Book of the Year 2018, shortlisted for the Indies Choice Award, and longlisted for the Best Translated Book Award.<\/p>\n

Last February, her translation of Kyoko Nakajima’<\/strong>s Naoki prize-winning novel The Little House<\/strong> was published.<\/p>\n

Takemori, along with other international writers and translators, will be part of a panel with the theme Words Crossing Worlds: Translation\/Transliteration<\/strong> during the 85th PEN International Congress in Manila. <\/strong><\/p>\n

It’s taking place on October 3 <\/strong>at 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.<\/strong> at the Auditorium of the National Museum of Fine Arts, Manila<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Takemori will also\u00a0have another talk titled Bridging Worlds: Conversations<\/strong> on translating Contemporary Japanese Literature with Ginny Takemori,\u00a0<\/strong>moderated by Filipino author\u00a0Jessica Zafra. <\/strong>Catch it on October 5, 2 p.m.,\u00a0<\/strong>at\u00a0The Studio, Fully Booked Bonifacio High Street.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Registration<\/strong> begins at 1 p.m.<\/strong> and will be on a first-come, first-served basis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Takemori and Zafra will be discussing Sayaka Murata’s Convenience Store Woman, specifically the process of translation, the current trend of women writers in Japan, and other contemporary Japanese works.<\/p>\n
