Space Encounters Gallery<\/b> unveils two back-to-back solo exhibits by artists<\/span>\u00a0Itsy<\/strong> Macasaet-Dazo<\/b> and <\/span>Jem Magbanua<\/b> as they present glimpses of their works\u2019 transformative process <\/span>from <\/span>September 26 to October 18, 2019.<\/b><\/p>\n

Cycles by Itsy Macasaet-Dazo<\/b><\/h3>\n

For her second solo show titled <\/span>Cycles<\/span><\/i>, Macasaet-Dazo created a series of seemingly macabre subjects interlaced with colorful, dainty flora. <\/span><\/p>\n

This confluence may sound jarring, but the execution is so effective that it renders her works as if they are visual fairytales.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

She derives inspiration from specific experiences, influenced by Asian and Scandinavian folk art, as well as botanical prints. In Cycles, she reflects on the concepts of mortality, malady, and redemption.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor this particular series, I looked back on a few cremation ceremonies that affected me deeply,\u201d she shared. \u201cIn the process of coming to terms with the experiences, I was reminded once again that life will always be beautiful.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The paradox of life and death\u2014and their perpetual cycle\u2014is examined in each of Macasaet-Dazo\u2019s mesmerizing works.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A Topology of Everyday Constellations by Jem Magbanua<\/b><\/h3>\n

An extension of her first solo show, <\/span>A Topology of Everyday Constellations\u00a0<\/span><\/i>is a study on time, temporality, and transformation as Magbanua juxtaposes images of domestic life with natural and urban vignettes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Magbanua successfully freezes moments in her canvas with the viewer, as if by chance would stumble upon these frozen visions so intriguing, there would be no other choice but to linger.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn pursuit of exploring space and how to depict it, I looked to the way furniture and architecture serve as representations of people and states of mind,\u201d she described.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Topology, the artist shares with the viewers her fascination with chairs, a piece of furniture that \u201chas a long history in fine art\u2014being the subject of scrutiny for painters like Vincent Van Gogh all the way to David Hockney,\u201d she added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For these two shows, Space Encounters Gallery <\/span>partnered with <\/span>Lamana PH<\/b> to showcase wooden furniture pieces from Japanese brand <\/span>Ishinomaki Laboratory, <\/b>turning the place into a homey respite of muted-colored walls that complement the artworks on show.<\/span><\/p>\n
