Nearly 100 artists from here and abroad will enter the gates of Manila\u2019s ancient walled city to exhibit works for the first <strong>Manila Biennale, <\/strong>happening\u00a0this February 3 to March 5, 2018.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13698\" src=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/event\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/02\/26196258_537037876659969_7665227180318178955_n.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Heralded as the \u201cfirst art experience festival in the history of the city\u201d, Manila Biennale will see Intramuros become a vast art exposition for sculpture, painting, video, film, performance, architecture, and installation. Carlos Celdran, artist, activist, and executive director of the event stresses the urgency and relevance of this artistic intervention, which has been going under the slogan, \u201cBring back the soul of the city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s time to put the city on the show. Intramuros is the origin of our city\u2019s identity. The walled city was Manila\u2019s first depository and laboratory for art and science. Unfortunately, since it\u2019s destruction back in 1945, the walled city\u2019s relevance and history have been all but forgotten. This year, Intramuros\u2019 famous parks and gardens, as well as a newly constructed venue that has not yet been unveiled to the public, will play the new role of art exhibition space.<\/p>\n<p>The theme of this year\u2019s festival is \u201cOpen City,\u201d which references December 26, 1945, a vulnerable period in Manila\u2019s history during World War II. The term o<em>pen city<\/em> takes on a new meaning today according to the creative interpretation of this year\u2019s curators and artists.\u00a0\u201cIt may reference open minds, open dialogues, open markets, and any metaphor that connotes freedom of speech, freedom of thought, and the open exchange of ideas.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first contemporary art biennale for the Philippines. The tradition of holding a biennale \u2014 which literally means \u201cevery other year\u201d\u2013 was first conceived in Venice, Italy, in 1895.
