Do you believe in the possibility of perfection or is it all determined by chance?\u201d These are the questions the curator <strong>Tony Godfrey<\/strong> asked eight artists in this exhibition: Pablo Capati III, Nona Garcia, Kawayan de Guia, Nilo Ilarde, Geraldine Javier, Donna Ong, Christina Quisumbing Ramilo, Zhao Renhui.<\/p>\n<p>As possible examples of chance, perfection, of minimalist or maximalist approaches to art making, small works by Jean Tinguely (1925-1991), James Lee Byars (1932-1997), Felix Gonzalez Torres (1957-1996), and Matthew Barney have al<span class=\"text_exposed_show\">so been included in the exhibition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"238\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12829\" src=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/event\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/12\/5a288db233a4f9.33326104.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/event\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/12\/5a288db233a4f9.33326104.jpg 600w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/event\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/12\/5a288db233a4f9.33326104-300x119.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Or, put another way, can art achieve perfection as James Lee Byars wished?\u00a0Or is it all arbitrary, a matter of chance, as in Jean Tinguely&#8217;s machine drawings?<\/p>\n<p>Should art be a small precise intervention in the world as in Felix Gonzalez-Torres works for public spaces?\u00a0Or should it present a complex imagination, overwhelming the senses, as Matthew Barney seeks to do?<\/p>\n<p>Of course, these are absolutist positions which we normally move between.\u00a0Conjunctions and contradictions are always possible: Byars described himself as a \u201cbaroque minimalist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Or, put yet another way, we could say one is classical and one is romantic.\u00a0We could say one tries to make us think and the other expresses the authorial personality. We could say one is conceptual and the other expressionist.<\/p>\n<p>Our understanding of what art is and what art does is based on such binaries and this exhibition will seek to explore that.<\/p>\n<p>Tony Godfrey came from Britain to Asia in 2009 and now lives and works in the Philippines as a teacher, writer, and curator. For many years he ran the MA (Contemporary Art) at Sotheby\u2019s Institute London. He has published books on contemporary art and his 1998 book, Conceptual Art, was the first publication to see conceptual art as a global phenomenon. His 2009 book Painting Today also tried to survey paintings as a global phenomenon. He is currently working on books on the Balinese artist Mahendra Yasa and the Shanghai painter Ding Yi.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Details:<\/strong><br \/>\nWhat: Chance, Perfection, Simple or Complex?
