Ballet Philippines, now in their 45th<\/sup> year, featured pieces fit for its sapphire season and more. Filled with powerful, passionate performances, their 6PM show on the 27th<\/sup> of September definitely felt a lot <\/em>less than its running time.<\/p>\n

Following the company’s staging of Giselle <\/em>(September 19-21), The Blue Moon Gala<\/em> is the second of the three shows in the Blue Moon Series.<\/em> It features choice masterworks performed by some of the top ballerinas and danseurs in the county to date.<\/p>\n

Bungkos Suite by\u00a0 Alice Reyes<\/span><\/p>\n

It was a bravura act through and through: from the arrogant Je Tu Elle<\/em>, the emotional Cold Song <\/em>to the fantastical Nocturne. <\/em>The Portland Festival Ballet’s performance was soulful. Former BP principal dancer Candice Adea was just adorable in Kitri’s Variation from Don Quixote.<\/em> The pas de deux R\/J<\/em>, a condensed version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet,<\/em> made one feel fully alive, in love, then barely breathing \u2013 all in seven minutes! The Bungkos <\/em>Suite, choreography by Alice Reyes, presented true Filipino character in the finest form of contemporary ballet. The Songs of the Wayfarer <\/em>left a bittersweet taste in one’s mouth, making one crave for one more pass\u00e9<\/em>, one more arabesque, one more chass\u00e9<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"Denise<\/p>\n

A PAIR OF STAR-CROSSED LOVERS TAKE THE STAGE: R\/J<\/em>\u00a0 is a seven-minute pas de deux performed by Denis Parungao and Richardson Yadao.<\/span><\/p>\n

The showstopper that topped all showstoppers, however, was Agnes Locsin’s Salome. <\/em>Guest ballerina Kris-belle Paclibar-Mamanguin captured the audience’s attention and, later, their hearts, earning the night’s first Bravo!<\/em> Her strong, sharp movements that\u00a0portrayed tragedy went\u00a0against and <\/em>with her soft, light balanc\u00e9<\/em> that\u00a0showed nostalgia. Her technique is flawless; her artistic prowess, uniquely beautiful.<\/p>\n

\"Norman<\/p>\n

Ballet Philippines ends the show bittersweet with Songs of the Wayfarer<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The Blue Moon Gala <\/em>had us dancing in the moonlight on our way back to our houses. A gem of a ballet concert indeed.<\/p>\n
