To mark Freddie Mercury\u2019s 70th<\/sup> birthday yesterday, September 5, the International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Centre, a shooting star has been named after the Queen lead singer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Discovered in 1991, in which also the year Mercury died, Asteroid \u20181991 FM3\u2019 is now officially declared as ‘Asteroid 17473 Freddiemercury.’<\/span><\/p>\n

The news was shared by Queen Guitarist Brian May, who has a doctorate in astrophysics from Imperial College, during a party in Switzerland.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m happy to be able to announce that the International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Center has today designated Asteroid 17473, discovered 1991, in Freddie\u2019s name, timed to honour his 70th birthday,\u201d said May.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHenceforth this object will be known as Asteroid 17473 Freddiemercury. This announcement is to recognise Freddie\u2019s outstanding influence in the world. It\u2019s a dark object \u2013 rather like a cinder in space.\u00a0 Viewed from the Earth it is more than 10,000 times fainter than you can see by eye, so you need a fair-sized telescope to see it and that\u2019s why it wasn\u2019t discovered until 1991.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He also stated that the newly named asteroid is \u201cjust a dot of light, but it\u2019s a very special dot of light\u201d and recognizes Mercury\u2019s musical and performing talents.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mercury, born Farrokh Bulsara on Sept. 5, 1946, is the legendary singer who wrote and performed hits including \u201cBohemian Rhapsody\u201d and \u201cWe Are the Champions\u201d with Queen, releasing over a dozen studio albums between 1973 and 1991.<\/span><\/p>\n
