The title itself is the statement, \u201cYou are like one!\u201d rather than a question to give credit and reprieve.<\/p>\n<p>Prejudice is dangerous and unforgiving, and this is what Elmer Dumlao wants us to reflect in his Kamukhamo series: to be more sensible, fair, cautious, and discerning yet critically caring. His work entitled, <em>Kamukhamo: Nagmumurang Kamias<\/em> is an allegory for a person of elder age yet behaves and dresses like a youngster. This work greatly implies our conservative nature towards social norms else one will be shunned and disgraced. \u201c<em>Nagmumura<\/em>\u201d means budding plant or sapling while \u201c<em>kamias<\/em>\u201d is synonymous with \u201c<em>may asim pa<\/em>.\u201d An individual with this connotation is most of the time negatively received in the community yet we fail to appreciate that maybe the person is just a fashionista and a free-spirited individual or maybe an introverted person on his or her way of being accepted or getting noticed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-64898\" src=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2022\/05\/Elmer-Dumlao_Nagmumurang-Kamias.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"455\" height=\"655\" srcset=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2022\/05\/Elmer-Dumlao_Nagmumurang-Kamias.jpg 455w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2022\/05\/Elmer-Dumlao_Nagmumurang-Kamias-208x300.jpg 208w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 455px) 100vw, 455px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">IMAGE from ArtistSpace<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dumlao\u2019s central piece <em>Kamukhamo: Salamin <\/em>is an interactive work of multiple mirrors installed on canvas where spectators can view themselves to their gusto while reading all positive attributes scribbled those one or two more aspects they might and wish to possess such as \u201c<em>batang-bata<\/em>,\u201d \u201c<em>malusog<\/em>,\u201d \u201c<em>swerte<\/em>,\u201d \u201c<em>yayamanin<\/em>,\u201d and \u201c<em>masayahin<\/em>.\u201d Inadvertently we love to be loved, and this piece is what is all about. It is a moral anecdote on why we tend to criticize, even though we do not want to be put in the same situation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-64899\" src=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2022\/05\/Elmer-Dumlao_Salamin.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"541\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2022\/05\/Elmer-Dumlao_Salamin.jpg 541w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2022\/05\/Elmer-Dumlao_Salamin-271x300.jpg 271w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 541px) 100vw, 541px\" \/><em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">IMAGE from ArtistSpace<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dumlao\u2019s <em>Kamukhamo: Doble Kara <\/em>not just focuses on the word signifiers but the materials he extracted to add further depth and meaning to his work. The \u201c<em>sakla<\/em>\u201dcard game which composed of portrait signifies how we are viewed differently by people we met. In all of our interactions, we put on a facade and simply bet on it wishing for luck and good outcome, and most importantly to shield ourselves from unnecessary harm, inadvertently no matter how we put our best foot forward we cannot control how we are perceived, thus, come see us as \u201c<em>mandaraya<\/em>,\u201d while some see us \u201c<em>tapat<\/em>,\u201d some \u201c<em>barumbado<\/em>,\u201d and some \u201c<em>magalang<\/em>,\u201d and some see us \u201c<em>duwag<\/em>\u201d or \u201c<em>mabangis<\/em>,\u201d and the list goes on. He believed it is neither right nor wrong.
