This March<\/strong>, Instituto Cervantes de Manila<\/strong> celebrates Women\u2019s Month<\/strong> by presenting the online film cycle \u201cPionerasm,<\/strong>\u201d a tribute to the first Spanish female filmmakers. The films will be shown through their channel on\u00a0Vimeo<\/a>\u00a0and will be freely accessible for 48 hours after airing.<\/p>\n

The series, which is comprised of six films, will kick off on March 10, Wednesday, at 3\u00a0a.m. with\u00a0an\u00a0online screening of\u00a0Segundo L\u00f3pez, aventurero urbano<\/em>\u00a0(available for 48 hours until 3\u00a0a.m on Friday, March 12). Directed by Ana Mariscal<\/strong> in 1953, this comedy is about an illiterate man from the province arriving in Madrid with no money, seeking to try his luck in the city. He makes friends with a variety of interesting persons with whom he experiences all sorts of mishaps.<\/p>\n

Enjoy the weekend watching the drama\u00a0La Gata<\/em>, directed by Margarita Alexandre<\/strong> in 1956. Mar\u00eda, the daughter of the overseer of a farm, falls in love with one of the workers with dreams of being a bullfighter. This will be available from March 13, Saturday until March 15, Monday at 3\u00a0a.m..<\/p>\n

The film cycle continues on March 17, Wednesday with\u00a0El crimen de Cuenca\u00a0<\/em>(1979) by Pilar Mir\u00f3.<\/strong> Based on a true story, two men have been accused by the authorities of murdering another person in spite of the lack of conclusive evidence. They end up confessing to the crime after having been submitted to torture. Mir\u00f3\u2019s bravery caused friction with the authorities in this film, the story behind which was a real scandal of its time.<\/p>\n

On March 20, Saturday, catch Josefina Molina<\/strong>\u2019s documentary\u00a0Funci\u00f3n de noche\u00a0<\/em>(1981), which portrays how the actress Lola Herrera<\/strong> was affected by her performance in the play\u00a0Cinco horas con Mario<\/em>\u00a0by Miguel Delibes<\/strong>, the personal crisis she experienced, and the eventual collapse of her marriage.<\/p>\n

On March 24, Wednesday, catch Cecilia<\/strong> and Jos\u00e9 Juan Bartolome<\/strong>\u2019s comedy\u00a0Despu\u00e9s de…: No se os puede dejar solos\u00a0<\/em>(1981).\u00a0During the early days of Spain\u2019s transition to democracy, the political opinions of the people, regular citizens, and government officials alike, were gathered by a small group of film-makers led by the directors of this documentary. Today, this documentary, which helps the viewer understand how various sectors of Spanish society thought of their past and how it planned to construct its future, is a true milestone that defines the history of Spanish cinema.<\/p>\n

Finally, the series will close with\u00a0Despu\u00e9s de<\/em>…:\u00a0Atado y bien atado<\/em>\u00a0(1981), again by Cecilia y Jos\u00e9 Juan Bartolom\u00e9,<\/strong>\u00a0on March 27, Saturday. A continuation of the previous documentary, this second part shows us the fear of the ultra-conservative sectors towards the construction of a completely different nation, and their plan to launch a coup d\u2019\u00e9tat<\/em> on February 1981. This work, which could not be premiered until 1983, positioned Cecilia Bartolom\u00e9 and her brother as among the pioneers of social documentaries that would have a profound impact, and until now continues to be crucial in Spanish film production.<\/p>\n
