{"id":59177,"date":"2021-02-22T17:00:18","date_gmt":"2021-02-22T09:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/?p=59177"},"modified":"2021-02-23T10:51:06","modified_gmt":"2021-02-23T02:51:06","slug":"no-more-plastic-coffee-stirrers-and-soft-drink-straws-nationwide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/2021\/02\/22\/no-more-plastic-coffee-stirrers-and-soft-drink-straws-nationwide\/","title":{"rendered":"Gov&#8217;t To Ban Stirrers, Straws Nationwide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Companies\u00a0in the plastic industry have one year to prepare to remove\u00a0plastic coffee stirrers and soft drink straws\u00a0that\u00a0are\u00a0soon-to-be-banned\u00a0as categorized to be <strong>non-environmentally acceptable products (NEAPs)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">According to\u00a0Environment Undersecretary<strong>\u00a0Benny Antiporda\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>the alternate chairperson of\u00a0National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC)\u00a0\u00a0said that the grace period will give leeway to all the companies to adjust properly.\u00a0The one-year countdown will begin after the official resolution\u00a0has been published nationwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">&#8220;There&#8217;ll be a phase-out period so their industry won&#8217;t be that affected,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The\u00a0NSWMC explained that these two products are long-overdue list, and it&#8217;s about time to\u00a0implement the banned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-59180\" src=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2021\/02\/straws-1531135-1599x1201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"910\" height=\"684\" srcset=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2021\/02\/straws-1531135-1599x1201.jpg 1599w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2021\/02\/straws-1531135-1599x1201-290x218.jpg 290w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2021\/02\/straws-1531135-1599x1201-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2021\/02\/straws-1531135-1599x1201-768x577.jpg 768w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2021\/02\/straws-1531135-1599x1201-1024x770.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 910px) 100vw, 910px\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><em>Straws\/IMAGE from freeimages.com\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong> REPUBLIC ACT 9003<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The basis of resolution\u00a0is according to\u00a0 Republic Act 9003 (Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000) ordered NSWMC to prepare, within one year from the effectivity of this law and in consultation with stakeholders concerned, a list of NEAPs that the government will ban.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Under RA 9003&#8217;s implementing rules and regulations, NEAPs are &#8220;products or packaging that are unsafe in production, use, post-consumer use, or that produce or release harmful products&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Plastic coffee stirrers and soft drink straws made it to the NEAP list as Antiporda said studies showed these are not environment-friendly.
