Locally brewed Ivatan Beer<\/strong> made from the sweet\u00a0potato is now available for mass production in\u00a0Batanes.<\/p>\n

In 2018,\u00a0Batanes State of College (BSC)<\/strong> received a Php 400,000 fund from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)<\/strong> to develop the beverage. The year after, their finished product made its public debut during the Science and Technology Caravan in Batanes. The product won third place in the Regional Invention Contest and Exhibit\u00a0in the same year.<\/p>\n

Dr.\u00a0Alfonso Simon<\/strong>, the\u00a0president of Batanes State College,\u00a0said in an interview that the\u00a0technology\u00a0behind the Ivatan beer using sweet potato was developed through the research and development\u00a0of BSC and transferred to local entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n

With BSC through Dr. Simon and trader\u00a0Dennis Lim of Tawsen Agri-Ventures\u00a0<\/strong>made an agreement and signed the\u00a0Technology Licensing Agreement (TLA) of the said beverage.<\/p>\n

“The fact that the Ivatan Beer is made from the locally-grown ‘wakay<\/em>‘ or sweet potato, which is abundant in the province of Batanes, the product becomes even more interesting and appealing to the locals of Batanes,” Dr. Simon\u00a0told\u00a0the\u00a0Philippine News Agency.<\/p>\n

While Lim, a former college instructor turned entrepreneur,\u00a0expressed his hope that Ivatan Beer’s commercialization will \u201cimmensely contribute to the flourishing Batanes’ tourism industry.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Department of Science and Technology-Cagayan Valley through Regional Director\u00a0Sancho Mabborang<\/strong>\u00a0has issued the Fairness Opinion Report (FOR) on the licensing agreement’s terms and conditions.<\/p>\n

In September 2020, Tawsen Agri Ventures and BSC signed the term sheet of the licensor and the licensee to agree on the conditions to push through with Ivatan Beer’s commercialization.<\/p>\n
