{"id":58067,"date":"2020-12-19T11:00:27","date_gmt":"2020-12-19T03:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/?p=58067"},"modified":"2020-12-21T13:30:43","modified_gmt":"2020-12-21T05:30:43","slug":"manilart-2020-wraps-up-a-safe-immersion-in-art-despite-the-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/2020\/12\/19\/manilart-2020-wraps-up-a-safe-immersion-in-art-despite-the-pandemic\/","title":{"rendered":"ManilART 2020 Wrap Up A Safe Immersion in Art Despite the Pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Held earlier this month from December 9 to 13, the country\u2019s national art fair\u2014ManilART, pulled through with its \u201c2020 Vision for a Future Reimagined.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The theme alludes to the necessary adjustments to sustain arts and culture in our current context, in line with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA)\u2019s 2020 theme for Museums and Galleries Month, \u201cEngaging Exhibitions for Emerging Generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-58069\" src=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/12\/ManilART2020_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"532\" srcset=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/12\/ManilART2020_2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/12\/ManilART2020_2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/12\/ManilART2020_2-768x511.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Patrons and art lovers were able to visit ManilART both onsite and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.manilartfair.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">online<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. At the venue, contactless visits and social distancing protocols were strictly observed. Despite fewer casual visitors (no minors below 18 allowed), art enthusiasts, collectors, and buyers came with a clear purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Immersed in art while staying safe<\/b><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There was a sense of gathering one\u2019s bearings through immersing oneself in fine visual arts even for just a moment. It\u2019s clear that there was a restorative element to visiting the art fair: Rom Mallick\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mb.com.ph\/2020\/12\/09\/it-was-great-to-be-at-an-exhibit-again\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Manila Bulletin article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> states, \u201cIt felt great to visit an actual, physical exhibit again.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">27 galleries showcased works of their artists, who were themselves glad to have participated in the event. Renowned wood sculptor Agi Pagkatipunan remarked: \u201cAlthough the crowds were not as voluminous as the previous fairs, and understandably so because of the protocols, the quality of the works and curation came out this year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-58068\" src=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/12\/ManilART2020_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"532\" srcset=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/12\/ManilART2020_1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/12\/ManilART2020_1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/12\/ManilART2020_1-768x511.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Likewise, a respected octogenarian artist also commented that this year, he only made essential trips like doctors\u2019 appointments\u2014making an exception for his ManilART show as it was essential to his soul.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In terms of the execution, both local and international guests were impressed with the safety protocols, with one foreign guest remarking that they wouldn&#8217;t have come if they didn&#8217;t see how prepared the event was.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Setting a precedent<\/b><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hopefully, ManilART 2020\u2019s successful practices could serve as a precedent for arts and cultural events slated to happen in the near future. Art cannot be divorced from our social contexts or society at large.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-58071\" src=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/12\/ManilART2020_4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"532\" srcset=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/12\/ManilART2020_4.jpg 800w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/12\/ManilART2020_4-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/12\/ManilART2020_4-768x511.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0was acutely aware of the current situation, having held ART for A Cause: CovAID, an online art auction to raise funds for medical frontliners&#8217; PPEs as a quick response last March and April. This time, ManilART is not just for the collector or viewing public, but for its own cause\u2014for the artists, galleries, and the whole support infrastructure that make up the visual arts creative economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In adherence to public health protocols, pre-registration and online ticketing by Ticketbooth made for maximum no-wait efficiency and contactless entry, while Safepass\u2019s contact tracing ensured managed capacity and safety compliance. Marshals were effective in guiding visitors, as well as ensuring that guests wore face masks and shields properly at all times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Food and beverages were handled with the utmost care. At designated \u201cSafehubs\u201d, dining tables with acrylic barriers were installed, properly distanced, and only in areas with high ceilings to ensure open airflow. Partner merchants such as Via Mare, Conrad Manila, and Giffard offered their meals \u201cGrab and Go\u201d style packaged to go with sealed utensil sets.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Inspiration at an all-time high<\/b><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This year\u2019s events prompted artists to create and showcase highly inspired works. As Pagkatipunan mentioned, the quality of the pieces rose this year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Several award-winning pieces were on display: Hyperrealist painter Ed Coronel\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/galleryninemanila.s3-ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com\/Coronel\/Gallery+Nine+Ed+Coronel+Catalog.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">American Art Award-winning works<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> had to be seen in person to appreciate their full intricacies. ManilART mainstay Romulo Galicano also exhibited <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/galleryninemanila.s3-ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com\/Galicano\/Galicano+PDF+v2.pdf\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Apocalypse<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, an allegorical chronicle of the pandemic\u2019s realities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-58072\" src=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/12\/ManilART2020_5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"532\" srcset=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/12\/ManilART2020_5.jpg 800w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/12\/ManilART2020_5-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/12\/ManilART2020_5-768x511.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With thoughts and emotions surging this 2020, many also produced uplifting pieces that focused on hope for the future, as well as an homage to the heroes of our times. For instance,\u00a0 Coronel\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Diversity<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is a symbolic rendering of his vision of unity despite our differences. Mark Belicarpio\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Frontliners <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">depicts a day in the life of essential workers who put their life on the line for the safety of others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the context of everything, ManilART 2020 carried on: to provide respite and inspiration, to protect its patrons, and to ensure that arts and culture remain relevant in our current context.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><em>This is a press release.
