TIME magazine\u2019s 100 Women of the Year<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>project\u00a0<\/strong>was created to honor and recognize women who were often \u201covershadowed\u201d by men. The list, as TIME states, includes women who obtained the position of a world leader or a titan of an industry \u2014 the titles usually given to men.\u00a0<\/span>Moreover, the list was formed to highlight outstanding women who were able to wield power despite the difficulties and inequalities they faced during their time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Former President Corazon Aquino<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0was chosen as the\u00a0Woman of the Year in 1986\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014 the year of the proclamation of her presidency.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Having entered the world of public service after her husband, Benigo Aquino Jr’s, death, Corazon Aquino became the new leader of the opposition \u2014 being critical of the way the country was governed during Ferdinand Marcos\u2019 reign.<\/span><\/p>\n

She gained support for her political party and won the presidency during the elections, thus earning the title as the first female president of the Philippines. Her political ambitions have led the Filipinos to call her \u201cMother of Democracy\u201d which endured even after being succeeded by the country\u2019s next set of elected leaders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile,\u00a0Maria Ressa<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0became Woman of the Year in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

Possessing an already remarkable career in news and journalism by establishing Rappler<\/a> in 2012, Maria Ressa, with the intention of serving the Filipino people by upholding the truth, garnered both praises and criticisms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Similarly, like former President Corazon Aquino, being highly critical and analytical towards the Duterte regime as being authoritative, Maria Ressa has faced multiple threats and arrests. Being subject to constant hate campaigns, Maria Ressa has still\u00a0<\/span>withstood turmoil and is continually risking her life to provide factual information through her news platform.<\/span><\/p>\n
