Upon their initial try that was elemental for the Philippines as well, a group of Filipino researchers was conferred as the\u00a0top of the bunch in the\u00a06th\u00a0Space Mission Idea Contest (MIC6)\u2014<\/strong>whose\u00a0<\/strong>final presentation took place during the\u00a07th University Space Engineering Consortium-Global<\/strong>\u00a0Meeting<\/strong> held\u00a0at the University of Tokyo\u00a0<\/strong>in\u00a0Japan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The four researchers hailing from the University of the Philippines Diliman <\/strong>partook\u00a0under the IVA-replaceable Small Exposed Experiment Platform<\/strong>\u00a0category,\u00a0<\/strong>upon which\u00a0they were the first place of\u00a0through their paper entitled Spectrum Monitoring from Space with i-SEEP (SMoSiS)\u2013Capturing and Mapping the Digital Divide from Space through Radio Frequency Spectrum Measurements<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The authors\u00a0Mar Francis D. De Guzman<\/strong>, Genedyn Gems S. Mendoza<\/strong>, Calvin Artemies G. Hilario<\/strong>, and Dr. Joel Joseph S. Marciano, Jr.<\/strong>\u00a0foremost\u00a0put the focus on acquiring\u00a0radio frequency spectrum utilization and occupancy data on a global scale.<\/p>\n

By having the data at hand and thereafter\u00a0sharing the raw and processed data to the general public, it hopes to bridge the digital divide that is deemed a serious matter amid the digital age.<\/p>\n

MIC6’s evaluation criteria were based on two factors, with each amounting to 5o points: originality and feasibility.<\/p>\n

Apart from a certificate, the researchers were granted with\u00a025% discount on a 1U-3U size payload for six months operations for a launch within two years from the award, as well as monetary award amounting 50,000 Japanese yen or at least Php 23,000.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur expectation was \u2018let\u2019s just have fun explaining this idea to a big audience that this is not your typical science experiment. It\u2019s an experiment for public good, illuminating the state of this infrastructure and connectivity in sharing it openly,\u201d said Dr. Mariano Jr., the\u00a0Director-General of the Philippine Space Agency.<\/p>\n

The Mission Idea Contest (MIC)<\/strong>\u00a0began in 2010 and has since been providing opportunities centered on introducing their creative ideas on an international scale to aerospace engineers, college students, consultants, and basically anybody interested in space.<\/p>\n

Notably, it aims to unearth a new perspective with regard to space exploration and exploitation.<\/p>\n
