Construction of the country’s first subway begins as the Department of Transporation (DOTr)<\/strong> starts site clearing works in the\u00a0Partial Operability Section <\/strong>of the\u00a0Metro Manila Subway Project<\/strong>. This section is composed of the subway’s first stations in Quezon City and Valenzuela City.<\/p>\n

A ceremony to formalize the beginning of the subway’s construction was held last December 21, 2019\u00a0at the depot site in Barangay Ugong, Valenzuela City where the subway’s East Valenzuela Station will rise. Said ceremony was led by\u00a0DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade.<\/p>\n

Part of the ceremony was the\u00a0distribution of checks and signing of contracts between affected landowners for the right-of-way acquisition for the project. Further, deeds of assignment for other affected properties were also signed.<\/p>\n

The Metro Manila Subway Project, dubbed as the “Project of the Century”<\/strong>, is set to be 36-km long that will run at up to 80-km per hour.<\/p>\n

Once completed and fully operational, the subway will have 15 stations spanning across seven local governments, three Metro Manila business districts, and will connect Quezon City to NAIA Terminal 3.\u00a0 It is expected to serve at least 370,000 passengers daily in its first year of full operations.<\/p>\n

The project will be implemented in two phases with the first phase covering the areas between Valenzuela and\u00a0Para\u00f1aque while the second phase will cover the north and south zones. Among the stations expected to open in the first phase are the\u00a0Quirino Highway-Mindanao Avenue Station, Tandang Sora Station, and North Avenue Station.<\/p>\n

Guided by Japan’s expertise, the Metro Manila Subway highlights technological advancements and disaster-resilient strategies that will boost the subway’s structural integrity.<\/p>\n

The subway is targeted to be partially operable by 2021.<\/p>\n
