Cebu has gained yet another global prize as <\/span>Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA)<\/b> received high recognition at the <\/span>2019 World Architectural Festival<\/b> (WAF).<\/b><\/p>\n

MCIA\u2019s Terminal 2 is the winner of the <\/span>Completed Buildings: Transport Category<\/b> in what is dubbed to be the world\u2019s largest interactive global architectural awards program and festival held last\u00a0December 6<\/b>, 2019,<\/strong>\u00a0at Amsterdam, The Netherlands<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

MCIA edged among other architectural structures in the category including Singapore\u2019s Jewel Changi Airport, Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Station,<\/span>\u00a0Taiwan’s Tainan Bus Station, <\/span>Turkey\u2019s Istanbul Airport, and Australia’s\u00a0<\/span>Caulfield to Dandenong Level Crossing Removal.<\/span><\/p>\n

Judges praised the terminal for its \u201csimple and elegant\u201d structure, as well as its use for many locally-sourced materials.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The internal spaces were also described to be \u201clight and uncluttered,\u201d with the design \u201c<\/span>capable of future extension<\/span>.\u201d This feature, for the judges, established \u201cmemorable travel experiences.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The terminal\u2019s architecture was designed by Hong Kong-based Integrated Design Associates, with support from Budji+Royal and Kenneth Cobonpue.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWith Mactan being the busiest international airport in the Philippines, this architecturally astounding building serves as an important gateway to the Philippines,\u201d the Department of Tourism said in praise for the airport\u2019s prize.<\/span><\/p>\n

The vibrant Queen City of the South was also recently named one of UNESCO’s New Creative City of Design<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in October.<\/span><\/p>\n
