Quezon City<\/b>\u00a0recently took part in the<\/span>\u00a0<\/b>C40 World Mayors Summit 2019\u00a0and signed the <\/span>\u2018Clean Air\u2019<\/b> and<\/span> \u2018Good Food\u2019 Cities Declarations<\/b> last October 10 and 11 in Copenhagen, Germany.<\/span><\/p>\n

The cities declaration signing aims to promote a healthy diet and deliver clean air among the international climate action group cities\u2019 citizens.<\/span><\/p>\n

Quezon City is the only Philippine city to participate in the summit wherein Mayor Joy Belmonte signed both clean air and good food declarations together with mayors from other global cities.<\/span><\/p>\n

“In a city like Quezon City where people are generally living not very prosperous lives, climate change takes a back seat. But when it is an issue they can relate with\u2014like flooding, for example, it affects their daily lives\u2014then that is the way they build a discourse so people can relate and participate in issues pertaining to addressing the climate crisis,” said Mayor Joy Belmonte in a panel discussion at the C40 World Mayors Summit.<\/p>\n

Clean Air Cities Declaration<\/b><\/h3>\n

At least 35 city mayors pledged to the <\/span>Clean Air Cities Declaration,<\/b> which aims to deliver clean air for the more than 140 million people that live in each of the C40 cities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The cities that signed the Clean Air Cities Declaration are Amman, Austin, Bengaluru, Barcelona, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Copenhagen, Delhi, Dubai, Durban (eThekwini), Guadalajara, Heidelberg, Houston, Jakarta, Los Angeles, Lima, Lisbon, London, Madrid, Medellin, Mexico City, Milan, Oslo, Paris, Portland, Quito, Quezon City, Rotterdam, Seoul, Stockholm, Sydney, Tel Aviv-Yafo, Tokyo, Warsaw, and Washington D.C.<\/span><\/p>\n

The mayors commit to recognize the importance of clean air as a human right by setting ambitious pollution reduction targets and implement substantive clean air policies by the year 2025.<\/p>\n

The involved cities plan to generate a “race to the top” on cleaning the air in the world\u2019s big cities by publicly reporting on their progress.<\/p>\n

Good Food Cities Declaration<\/b><\/h3>\n

Meanwhile, 14 global cities signed the <\/span>Good Food Cities Declaration<\/b>, which aims to promote and preserve the health of citizens and the planet by working on a “Planetary Health Diet” for all by 2030.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here, mayors are tasked to work with their citizens and use their procurement powers to modify the kind of food cities buy, and introduce health policies for affordable, accessible, and healthy food for all.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other cities signing the Good Food Cities Declaration include Barcelona, Copenhagen, Guadalajara, Lima, London, Los Angeles, Milan, Oslo, Paris, Quezon City, Seoul, Stockholm, Tokyo, and Toronto.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
