Masungi Georeserve<\/strong> was recognized as one of the top three projects under the Enterprises category at the annual United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Awards<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Held at St. Petersburg, Russia<\/strong> last September 10<\/strong>, the UNWTO Awards is the flagship awards for the global tourism sector.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Filipino conservation project located in Baras, Rizal is recognized among the top three most sustainable and innovative tourism projects from the private sector worldwide. Among almost 200 projects nominated, V Resorts of India won the top prize.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tourism Secretary Berna Romulo-Puyat, who was in attendance at the awards, expressed her support for Masungi.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The Department of Tourism congratulates Masungi Georeserve for being in the top three finalists of the UNWTO Awards. We hope that this award will make more people visit and support the georeserve!” Sec. Romulo-Puyat\u00a0said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Masungi Georeserve is a grassroots conservation project protecting 60-million-year-old limestone formations and more than 400 documented species of biodiversity in Rizal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the Jury Members of the UNWTO Istvan Ujhelyi from the European Parliament emphasized how important Masungi is as a form of sustainable tourism in making a difference in restoring and protecting areas of ecological significance.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Projects like Masungi must be safeguarded and promoted especially in emerging countries like the Philippines where challenges persist,” Ujhelyi added.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"One of the most photographed spots in the area is called sapot (web)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

In a span of one year, Masungi has received three international awards including a special commendation at the UN Convention on Biological Diversity 4th Conference of Parties and as a global finalist for Destination Stewardship Award at the World Travel and Tourism Council\u2019s Tourism for Tomorrow Awards.<\/span><\/p>\n
