The loan will finance the construction of the first phase of the country&#8217;s first subway.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-40982\" src=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2018\/04\/Manila-Subway-04.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2018\/04\/Manila-Subway-04.jpg 800w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2018\/04\/Manila-Subway-04-300x174.jpg 300w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2018\/04\/Manila-Subway-04-768x446.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The $934.75-million loan is only the first of the initial funding that will cover around 73 percent of JICA&#8217;s part in the\u00a0total project cost of $7.1 billion. The Japanese government was represented by incoming\u00a0JICA Chief Representative Yoshio Wada, outgoing Chief Representative Susumo Ito, and Noboru Kageyama from the Japanese Embassy.<\/p>\n<p><em>Also read:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/2017\/04\/05\/jica-releases-plans-for-mega-manila-subway\/\" target=\"_blank\">JICA releases plans for Mega Manila Subway<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>A sealed deal<\/h3>\n<p>Last February 20, 2019, the main contract for design and build of the subway was signed between the Philippine government and Japan. The contract initiates construction of the first three stations: Quirino Highway-Minadano Avenue Station, Tandang Sora Station, and North Avenue Station. Reinier Paul Yebra represented the Philippine government, while\u00a0Shimizu Corporation&#8217;s Manila Branch General Manager, Makoto Fujii, signed on behalf of the Joint Venture among Shimizu Corporation, Fujita Corporation, Takenaka Civil Engineering Co., Ltd., and EEI Corporation.<\/p>\n<h3>Groundbreaking\u00a0of the &#8220;project of the century&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p>February 27 marked the groundbreaking of Philippine&#8217;s first subway system at Barangay Ugong in Valenzuela City.
