Skyway just opened up a new northbound toll plaza, and people are still getting used to them.<\/p>\n<p>Skyway O&amp;M Corporation, the operator of the South Metro Manila Skyway Project (which we fondly call the Skyway), recently opened the Runway Exit Toll Plaza. Located a few kilometers before the NAIA off-ramps, these were meant to \u201cfacilitate faster toll collection on the Skyway\u2019s elevated section.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25447\" src=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2018\/01\/Runway-Toll-Plaza-A-and-B_marked.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2018\/01\/Runway-Toll-Plaza-A-and-B_marked.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2018\/01\/Runway-Toll-Plaza-A-and-B_marked-290x218.jpg 290w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2018\/01\/Runway-Toll-Plaza-A-and-B_marked-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2018\/01\/Runway-Toll-Plaza-A-and-B_marked-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><em>CAUSE OF THE JAM. The Runway Toll Plaza, a recent addition to the Skyway, saw several thousand vehicles stuck in traffic last Monday, January 29. Many pointed to Runway A (left) as the main cause, since most vehicles that use the Skyway paid in cash instead of the ETC.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The new toll plaza consists of two gates. Runway A (the nearer of the two) has four lanes with five tellers each and is dedicated to cash payments. Think of SM Supermarket\u2019s basket lanes, but with cars instead of baskets.<\/p>\n<p>Runway B has three lanes and makes use of the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system, otherwise known as the RFID tags.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"zxx\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qA5RqrVsOB\">pic.twitter.com\/qA5RqrVsOB<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; SKYWAY SOMCO (@SkywaySOMCO) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SkywaySOMCO\/status\/956149530222673920?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 24, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Advisories went out on their official Twitter account (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SkywaySOMCO\/\"><u>@SkywaySOMCO<\/u><\/a>) as early as January 24 informing people who paid to use the Skyway with cash about what they had to do with their receipts and QR Code stubs (which people usually left behind): present both at Runway A. This is seen as the cause of last Monday\u2019s traffic jam, which started as early as 5:30 am.<\/p>\n<p>This lead to thousands of vehicles stuck in traffic, seen as far back as the South Luzon Expressway\u2019s Southwoods exit. Netizens poked fun at the traffic jam, calling it \u201celevated EDSA.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SkywaySOMCO?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SkywaySOMCO<\/a> this additional toll booth at skyway just to remit tickets is another lame solution to slowdown traffic going to Edsa. But with this addtl 30min to remit the ticket, what\u2019s the point of using the skyway? Might as well go through SLEX.
