{"id":20094,"date":"2017-08-16T08:30:26","date_gmt":"2017-08-16T00:30:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/?p=20094"},"modified":"2017-08-17T08:43:04","modified_gmt":"2017-08-17T00:43:04","slug":"ichiro-kataoka-accompanies-dragnet-girl-at-the-11th-international-silent-film-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/2017\/08\/16\/ichiro-kataoka-accompanies-dragnet-girl-at-the-11th-international-silent-film-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"Ichiro Kataoka accompanies Dragnet Girl at the 11th International Silent Film Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Japan Foundation, Manila proudly brings a rare performance by Japanese renowned benshi, or silent film narrator Ichiro Kataoka, accompanying Yasujiro Ozu\u2019s silent gangster film <em>Dragnet Girl (1933)<\/em> on\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Saturday, September 2<\/span><\/span>, at\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">5:30 pm<\/span><\/span>\u00a0during the 11th International Silent Film Festival Manila held at Shangri-La Cineplex, Shangri-La Plaza from\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Thursday, August 31 to Sunday, September 3<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20097\" src=\"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2017\/08\/rsz_1_master_benshi_ichiro_kataoka.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"2880\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><em>Ichiro Kataoka is one of the best-known active professional benshi in Japan today.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Yasujiro Ozu\u2019s gangster film Dragnet Girl, which Kataoka will narrate, is considered as one of Japanese cinema\u2019s masterpieces; and\u00a0is about a body guard committing robbery to help a subordinate in trouble and plans to make a getaway, but is confronted by his lover, a typist who by night inhibits the world of the yakuza. Kataoka will narrate the film in Japanese, and there will be the subtitle of his narration in English. The movie will be presented in a rare 35mm and lasts 100 minutes. However, the silent films screened in Japan from the turn of the century to the mid-1930s were not only accompanied by live music but also a performer, known as a <em>katsudo benshi<\/em> (\u6d3b\u52d5\u5f01\u58eb) or <em>benshi<\/em> (\u5f01\u58eb) for short, delivering live performance acting as a narrator, actor, and storyteller. Accompanying the silent film and benshi is the CER, one of the Philippines\u2019 world class string ensembles founded in 2002 by Maestro Celso Espejo, the group\u2019s conductor and one of the pillars of the Philippine Rondalla. The CER is composed of three generations of outstanding <em>rondalla<\/em> players and has been invited to perform nationally and internationally.<\/p>\n<p>Accompanying Kataoka\u2019s captivating live interpretations of silent film will be the acclaimed Celso Espejo Rondalla (CER), performing their own original music score giving authentic Philippine flavor to the Japanese classical film.
