{"id":16310,"date":"2017-05-03T10:00:13","date_gmt":"2017-05-03T02:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/?p=16310"},"modified":"2022-05-04T14:04:22","modified_gmt":"2022-05-04T06:04:22","slug":"possible-meeting-of-the-minds-trump-invites-duterte-to-white-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/primer.com.ph\/blog\/2017\/05\/03\/possible-meeting-of-the-minds-trump-invites-duterte-to-white-house\/","title":{"rendered":"Possible meeting of the minds: Trump invites Duterte to White House"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A meeting between two of the world\u2019s most polarizing leaders may soon happen at the White House as U.S. President Donald Trump invited the country\u2019s tough-talking President Rodrigo Duterte during the 30<sup>th<\/sup> ASEAN Summit.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the White House said Trump spoke with Duterte via phone last April 29 (April 30 in Manila) inviting the latter to \u201cdiscuss the importance of United States-Philippines alliance.\u201d Duterte, however, was unable to commit to a specific date due to prior engagements.<\/p>\n<p>Other matters the two leaders talked about were regional security concerns within Southeast Asia and the country\u2019s current fight against illegal drugs. In particular, they talked about the threat posed by North Korea as tensions rise between Pyongyang and Washington.<\/p>\n<p>Duterte earlier asked Trump not to go to war against North Korea \u201cbecause my region will suffer immensely &#8211; the first fallout would be us and Asia, very near, very dangerous,\u201d during a press conference held after the 30<sup>th<\/sup> ASEAN Summit.<\/p>\n<p>The White House defended the invite, saying the call was entirely about North Korea, and that \u201cThere is nothing right now facing this country and facing the region that is a bigger threat than what\u2019s happening in North Korea,\u201d White House chief of staff Reince Priebus told ABC\u2019s \u201cThis Week with George Stephanopoulos.\u201d This Week is a Sunday-morning discussion program on politics.<\/p>\n<p>This is the second time both leaders have spoken to each other over the phone. Duterte called Trump late in 2016 after his victory in the U.S. Presidential Elections was announced.
