Lav Diaz\u2019 Ang Babaeng Humayo (The Woman Who Left) <\/em><\/strong>ranked 31st<\/sup> in the British Film Institute\u2019s Sights and Sounds Magazine\u2019s best movies for 2016. This was based on the surveys and rankings of about 163 film critics and curators from all over the world.<\/p>\n

Aside from ranking 31st<\/sup>, the Golden Lion awardee was also hailed as one of the top Asian films for 2016, together with Cemetery of Splendour <\/em><\/strong>and Under the Shadow. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Derek Malcolm, a critic from the United Kingdom, noted, \u201cThe Woman Who Left <\/em><\/strong>is a film that lives in the memory as a moral, political, and cultural statement as well as a fine piece of filmmaking.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thai Critic Kong Rithdee talked about how this particular film is a mirror of the Southeast Asian\u2019s situation. \u201cThe theme is big: humanity, guilt, crime, punishment, injustice, despair \u2013 the Filipino despair, or maybe the Southeast Asian despair, drenched in [the] sweat and blood of the common man. In this film, what moves us even more is the possibility of mercy, compassion, even grace, struggling to blossom like a flower in hell.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two other Lav Diaz films made it to the list, namely Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis <\/em><\/strong>and Ang Araw Bago ang Wakas <\/em><\/strong>which were also recognized in various international film festivals.<\/p>\n

Brillante Mendoza\u2019s award-winning film Ma\u2019 Rosa <\/em><\/strong>were also listed in French critic Jean-Michel Frodonand Canadian critic\/curator James Quandt list of best films.<\/p>\n

Topping the list of best films are Maren Ade\u2019s Toni Erdmann<\/em><\/strong>, Barry Jenkins\u2019 Moonlight<\/em><\/strong>, Paul Verhoeven\u2019s Elle<\/em><\/strong>, Kelly Reichardt\u2019s Certain Women<\/em><\/strong>, and Andrea Arnold\u2019s American Honey. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
