  • Musicals are always a pleasure to watch and much like plays, we get to connect with the characters through song and dance that makes for the complete theater experience. These shows always seem to capture the hearts of many with their soulful ballads and amazing choreography. This year, musicals are set to take the stage and we sure are psyched for them!

    2019 was off to a good start for theater productions as we’ve seen amazing shows in the past few months. A highlight of the theater scene so far is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera – if you haven’t seen it yet, the show was extended until April 6, 2019, at The Theater at Solaire.

    Here’s a rundown of some of the musicals that will be gracing the stage this 2019!

    BEAUTIFUL: The Carole King Musical

    BEAUTIFUL: The Carole King Musical tells the inspiring true story of Carole King from her days as a teenage songwriter to becoming an inductee of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The musical takes the audience to where it all began. BEAUTIFUL is a part of Atlantis Theatrical’s 20th Anniversary season along with Angels In America.

    The show is set to open on June 14, 2019, at the Meralco Theater, Pasig City. The show features Filipina actress, Kyla Rivera, known for her roles as Princess Jasmine in Aladdin, Carrie White in Carrie and Sherrie in Rock of Ages as the titular Carole King.

    Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

    The multi-awarded musical, Sweeney Todd will be completing Atlantis Theatrical’s 20th Anniversary season. The story follows the titular character, Sweeney Todd who seeks revenge on Judge Turpin after being wrongly accused of a crime and deported. 

    While complete details of the show are yet to be announced, Sweeney Todd is set to premiere on October 2019 at The Theater at Solaire. Playing the role of Sweeney Todd is rock icon Jett Pangan and playing the role of Mrs. Lovett is the incomparable Lea Salonga.

    The Quest for The Adarna

    Repertory Philippines presents a retelling of the 16th-century Filipino epic, “Ibong Adarna”. The Quest for the Adarna is centered on Princes Pedro, Diego and, Juan – the children of King Fernando as they embark on the journey to find the Adarna Bird whose song has magical properties that can heal the King from his sickness. This musical retelling of Ibong Adarna will surely capture the hearts of kids and adults alike!  

    The Quest for the Adarna will be directed by Joy Virata with the Book and Lyrics by Luna Griño-Inocian and Music by Rony Fortich. The show is set to run from September 13, 2019, to January 12, 2020, at The Onstage Theater, Greenbelt 1.

    With the year starting off with an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, why not end the year with another one? While official show dates to this classic are yet to be announced, CATS, a story of the Jellicle cats and their magical Jellicle Ball is set to take the stage in the latter part of the year at The Theater at Solaire.

    Joanna Ampil, who played the role of Grizabella The Glamour Cat in the production’s UK and European Tour from 2013 – 2014 and in the World Tour from 2017 – 2018 will be reprising her role during the shows run in Manila. CATS first came to Manila back in 2010 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the 2010 production featured Lea Salonga as Grizabella.
