Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-Cov) is a viral respiratory illness caused by a coronavirus known to cause respiratory illness among humans and animals. The first case of MERS was reported in Saudi Arabia in 2012 and has now spread to more than 12 countries worldwide.

MERS can be translated from human to human (and even animal to human) through close physical contact with an infected human – this maybe by providing care to an infected patient or by living in close physical quarters with the patient. Patients infected by MERS display shortness of breath, difficulty in breathing, coughing, diarrhea and kidney failure. If you have traveled anywhere within the Middle East, make sure to see your health care provider and your hospital to get a clean bill of health.

Here are some tips to remember to safeguard yourself and your family from the dreaded virus.

    1. Always wash your hands with soap and water

    2. Always cover your nose and mouth with tissue paper when you cough or sneeze. Dispose of the tissue properly.

    3. Keep your hands off your face. Stop touching your face with unwashed hands.

    4. Avoid close contact with sick people.

    5. Always and regularly clean surfaces, especially those frequently touched by you and your loved ones.

If you happen to get in contact with a suspected MERS-Cov carrier, call the Department of Health immediately: (02) 711-1001 and 711-1002.
